LADY MONARCHS BIG SECOND HALF RESULTS IN 60-54 VICTORY OVER MANHATTANVILLE
WILKES-BARRE — The King's College women's basketball team overcame a seven-point half-time deficit by outscoring visiting Manhattanville College 37-24 over the final 20 minutes of play as the Lady Monarchs posted a big early-season 60-54 Freedom Conference victory Saturday in Scandlon Gymnasium.
With the win, King's improved to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in Freedom Conference play, while Manhattanville slipped to 3-4 and 1-1 in league play. The win also snapped a four-game losing streak to the Valiants. The win was King's most impressive of the season against a Manhattanville squad that was the Freedom Conference runner-up a year ago and has posted victories this season over 18th ranked Bowdoin and defending Freedom Conference champion DeSales.
King's got off to a sluggish start fell behind 23-11 after Taylor Wilson caned a three-pointer for the Valiants with 9:50 left in the first half. The Lady Monarchs cut the margin to 23-17 but a three-point play by Courtney Turner pushed the score to 26-17 with 4:43 to play. King's closed to within 29-23 on a pair of Paige Carlin (Scotrun, PA, Pocono Mountain East) foul shots with 1:20 on the clock, but the Valiants would take a seven-point lead into the locker room when Kelly Hyjeck made one-of-two foul shots with 0:48 to go as Manhattanville left the court with a 30-23 play in the lead.
Much of King's struggles were derived from being out-rebounded by the smaller Valiants 24-18, while surrendering nine offensive boards. The Lady Monarchs were also unable to take advantage of free throw opportunities, making only five of 11 foul shots in the half.
In the second stanza, King's opened with a three-pointer by Lindsay Atchison (Green Village, NJ, Chatham)to cut the lead to 30-26. Later, Carlin made one-of-two foul shots to bring King's to within 32-29 with 16:17 to play. Manhattanville answered with a 9-4 spurt to rebuild the lead to 41-33 at the 12:58 mark, but King's would respond.
Celia Rader (Scranton, PA, Scranton Prep) scored six points points during a 8-4 Lady Monarch surge to close to within 45-41 with 7:13 to go. After a pair of foul shots by Simona Gordon gave the Valiants a 47-41 lead with 6:56, King's made its move.
One-of-two foul shots from Atchison and two from Molly Dahl (Garrison, NY, Walter Panas)cut the lead to 47-44. After a Valiant miss, Rader drained a three-pointer to tie the score at 47-47. After the teams traded two foul shots apiece, King's took its first lead of the game with 3:23 remaining when Dahl canned two charity tosses. Gordon made one-of-two foul shots to bring the Valiants within 51-50, but Rader buried a huge three-pointer to propel the Lady Monarchs to a 54-50 lead with 2:42 on the clock.
Gordon then converted a short jumper to cut the lead to 54-52 but Rader scored her fifth straight point with pair of free throws to extend the King's lead to 56-52 with 0:49 remaining. After a Manhattanville miss, Katlin Michaels (Berwick, PA, Berwick)was fouled and made good on one-of-two attempts to give the Lady Monarchs a 57-52 advantage with 0:30 to go. Manhattanville then committed a turnover and Michaels was fouled with 0:16 to play and made both shots to stretch the King's lead to 59-52.
Turner scored on an uncontested layup with 0:10 on the clock to bring the Valiants to within 59-54, but Brittany Muscatell (Lambertville, NJ, Immaculata)was fouled with 0:10 left and brought the final score to 60-54 by taking the first of two free throws.
It was clearly a tale of two halves for the Lady Monarchs who outrebounded Manhattanville 32-24 in the second half and made good on 17-of-23 foul shots over the final 20 minutes of play.
Rader finished with a team-high 19 points, including 14 in the second half, making good on 4-of-8 shots from three-point range, while tallying four steals. Michaels followed with 13 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and three steals while Atchison enjoyed an outstanding all-around game with 10 points, 14 rebounds, and six blocked shots. Dahl contributed eight points and nine rebounds to help pace the King's attack.
Manhattanville was led by Gordon with 19 points and eight rebounds while Wilson added 13 points and five boards. Turner chipped in with 11 points, seven boards, and four steals.
King's returns to action Tuesday by hosting Rutgers-Camden University at 6:00 p.m. in Scandlon Gymnasium.
