LADY MONARCHS WIN 4TH STRAIGHT WITH 77-67 VICTORY OVER LYCOMING
WILKES-BARRE — The King's College women's basketball team opened up 12-point halftime lead and trailed just once in the contest as the Lady Monarchs posted a 77-67 non-conference victory over visiting Lycoming College Thursday night in Scandlon Gymnasium.
With the win, King's improved to 6-3 on the year while Lycoming slipped to 4-5.
King's opened up the game with 9-2 surge, keyed by four points from Katlin Michaels and three by Paige Carlin. After the Lady Monarchs built an eight-point lead at 15-7 following a three-pointer from Celia Rader, Lycoming used a 9-2 run to cut the score to 17-16 with 10:39 remaining in the half. King's used a short jumper from Lindsay Atchison to push the score to 19-16 moments later, but the Warriors countered with a 5-0 spurt to take their only lead of the game when Julie Antonelli's jumper gave Lycoming 21-19 advantage with 7:23 on the clock.
But King's was ignited by a Brittany Muscatell layup, one-of two free throws from Rader, and a driving layup by Lindsay Atchison to take a 24-21 lead. An inside basket from Muscatell, and three-pointers by Nina Magan and Paige Carlin ended a 13-0 King's run as the Lady Monarchs built a 32-21 lead with 3:59 left in the half.
After a Lycoming bucket, Muscatell drained a tree-pointer and Megan Boccio canned a pair of foul shots to extend the King's advantage to 37-23 at the 2:46 mark.
Lycoming would score the next five points to close within 37-28 with 1:52 to go, but the Lady Monarchs outscored the Warriors 7-4 the rest of the way to enter the half with a 44-32 lead.
In the second stanza, King's immediately added to its lead with a pair of foul shots from Muscatell and a driving basket from Michaels to take a 48-32 lead. Later, Atchison scored on another inside basket to give King's a 17-point lead, its biggest lead of the game, at 50-33 with 16:39 left.
Lycoming, however, would battle back and slowly chipped away at the lead. A three-pointer from Chelsea Shearer ended a 14-2 Warrior run, cutting the King's advantage to 52-47. But seven straight points by Molly Dahl upped the King's lead to 59-47 with 8:00 remaining.
The Warriors again battle back and used a 12-5 spurt to come within 64-59 on a traditional three-point play by Leeann Randall. Lycoming would come no closer, however as King's countered with a 8-1 run of its own to build a 72-60 lead after a pair of foul shots by Rader and a three-pointer from Atchison with 2:45 left in the contest. Lycoming would come no closer than 10 points the rest of the way.
Rader and Carlin led King's with 16 points each while Atchison added 13 points and seven boards. Muscatell contributed nine points, six assists, and five rebounds while Dahl netted nine points. Defensively, King's forced Lycoming into 29 turnovers while the Lady Monarchs committed 17. King's also took advantage at the foul line, making 24-of-33 free throws while the Warriors were 12-of-14.
Lycoming was paced by Randall with 16 points while Antonelli and Kaitlyn Ober followed with 15 and 11 points respectively.
King's will return to action Saturday night when the Lady Monarchs host Keystone College at 7:00 p.m. in Scandlon Gymnasium in the team's final game of the semester.
