MONARCH MEN HOLD ON TO SECOND-PLACE WITH 84-77 VICTORY OVER DELAWARE VALLEY
WILKES-BARRE – The King's College men's basketball team overcame a one-point halftime deficit by outscoring Delaware Valley College 45-37 during the second half as the Monarchs secured an important 84-77 victory Thursday in Scandlon Gymnasium.
With the win, King's improved to 111 overall and 7-4 in Freedom Conference play. The Aggies, meanwhile slipped to 11-11 and 4-7 in league games. The Monarchs remain in second place in Freedom Conference games. The Monarchs were tied with Eastern University (6-4 Freedom) but the Eagles game against Wilkes was postponed until next Thursday.
After an evenly played first half that featured nine ties and neither team leading by more than five points, the Aggies took a 40-39 lead into the break after King's Danny Maguschak cut into the lead with a tip-in off a missed shot at the buzzer.
King's carried that momentum into the second half and used an 11-4 run to take a 50-44 lead following a pair of foul shots from Kevin Conroy and a three-pointer by Mike Wagner. After the Aggies closed to 52-49, King's countered with back-to-back three-pointers from Wagner and Nick Reisig and a bucket down low from Conroy to elevate the lead to 60-49 with 13:03 left in the contest.
The Monarchs later took a 12-point lead on two occasions, the second coming on a Maguschak jumper to give King's a 67-55 lead with 8:49 to play. The Aggies would hang tough and cut the lead to 76-70 with 1:21 to play after a three-pointer from Chris Ellis. James Jones would bring Delaware Valley to within 87-74 on a jumper with 0:32 remaining, but Wagner made 3-of-4 foul shots and Reisg added two more charity tosses as the Monarchs held on for the victory.
Conroy led King's with 19 points, including 9-of-13 from the foul line. Wagner also netted 19 points, all coming in the second half, including three three-pointers. Magauschak added 13 while Reisig tallied eight. Jones netted 30 points for Delaware Valley while Darryl White posted 18 points.
King's will next host first-place, defending conference champion DeSales Saturday at 3:00 p.m. in Scandlon Gym.
