LADY MONARCH CAGERS LIGHTS OUT IN 78-60 VICTORY OVER DELAWARE VALLEY
WILKES-BARRE – Celia Rader and Kayla Dick put on a three-point shooting clinic with a combined 12 treys as the King's College women's basketball team posted a 78-60 victory over visiting Delaware Valley College in an important Freedom Conference matchup Thursday in Scandlon Gym.
With the win, King's improved to 12-10 overall and moved into a three-way tie for third-place in the Freedom Conference with a 7-4 mark. Delaware Valley, meanwhile, fell to 15-7 overall and 7-4 in league games.
In the first half, King's trailed 6-5 before the Lady Monarchs exploded offensively. A three-pointer, then two foul shots from Celia Rader enabled the Lady Monarchs to forge a 10-10 tie with 12:01 on the clock. A traditional three-point play from Lindsay Atchison, a driving lay-up by Paige Carlin, and back-to-back three-pointers from Rader gave the Lady Monarchs a 21-10 advantage with 9:20 left in the half.
After a Delaware Valley bucket, King's went on a 11-3 spurt to take a 32-15 lead at the 5:09 mark after five straight points from Kayla Dick. After the Aggies cut the score to 35-23, Dick buried another trey with 0:27 on the clock to give the Lady Monarchs a 38-23 half-time lead.
The second half saw more of the same as Rader opened the final stanza with another three-pointer and Atchison added her second three-point play to bolster the King's lead at 44-23 with 19:02 left in the contest.
Delaware Valley would draw no closer than 17 points, that coming on a Brittney Zimmerman lay-up with 10:44 left. But King's quickly responded and pushed the score to 69-45 with 6:31 remaining. The Lady Monarchs took their biggest lead of the game at 25 points when a three-pointer by Dick gave King's a 76-51 advantage with 3:48 to play.
Rader was outstanding in making 7-of-10 shots while going a perfect 7-for-7 from three-point range to score a career-best 23 points and dished out five assists. Dick, who also had a personal-best 19 points, was 6-of-11 from the floor and canned 5-of-8 shots from down town. Carlin tallied 12 points, four rebounds, and four assists while Atchison added eight points and six rebounds. Lynott chipped in with a career-high 17 rebounds, including seven on the offensive glass, in just 23 minutes of play.
Kim Venerra led the Aggies with 16 points while Zimmerman followed with 15. Jenna Peoples and Brittany Battinieri chipped in with 11 and 10 points respectively.
King's returns to action Saturday when the Lady Monarchs host defending conference champion DeSales at 1:00 p.m. in Scandlon Gymnasium.
