WILKES-BARRE – Sophomore power forward Julianna Lynott scored a career-high 27 points and pulled down 14 rebounds to lead the visiting King's College women's basketball team to a 90-61 route of cross-town rival Wilkes University in season finale for both teams Saturday in the Marts Center.
King's, which was plagued by injuries much,of the season ended the year with a 13-12 record and a 8-6 Freedom Conference mark utilizing a squad comprised of only freshmen and sophomore players. Wilkes, meanwhile, ended its season at 3-22 and 1-13 in league games.
In the first half Wilkes jumped out to a 9-4 lead following a jumper by Brittany Ely at the 16:02 mark. King's countered with a 6-0 run and took a 10-9 lead after a three-pointer by Kayla Dick and a driving bucket from Abby Malloy with 13:47 left.
After Wilkes took an 11-10 lead on a Megan Kazmerski basket at 13:33, King's went off on a 13-0 surge. Four points each from Lynott and Carlin, combined with a three-pointer by Dick and an inside basket from Liz Demko gave the Lady Monarchs a 23-11 lead and capped a 19-2 surge from over a 5:34 span.
After Wilkes cut the lead to 23-15 on a Kazmerski basket, King's used four points from Carlin, a driving lay-up by Lindsay Atchison, and one-of-two foul shots from Lynott to build a 30-17 advantage with 6:48 left in the half. Wilkes eventually cut the lead to 34-25 but four six straight points by Lynott, one-of-two foul shots from Megan Rigous, and a jumper by Dick upped the King's advantage to 43-29 with 1:47 on the clock.
After a Wilkes three-pointer by Kazmerski, Dick and Demko made four consecutive foul shots to give the Lady Monarchs a 47-32 lead at the break.
Lynott broke her career scoring high of 15 points in the first half, tallying 18 points and nine rebounds in 14 minutes of play. Dick added 10 points while Carlin contributed eight.
In the second stanza, King's continued to control play as a three-pointer by Jess Segilia pushed the score to 55-40. Wilkes, however, chipped away and cut the lead to 57-48 following buckets by Lyndsay Ellis and Kazmerski.
That would be the closest Wilkes would come as a bucket by Rigous, two foul shots from Demko, an inside basket, and a three-pointer by Malloy capped a 10-0 run to up the Lady Monarch lead to 68-48 with 9:38 on the clock.
The Lady Monarchs continued to pour it on and eventually pushed the score to 86-57 after four points from Molly Dahl, one-of-two foul shots from Demko, and three more points by Lynott with 2:08 to go.
