WOMEN'S LACROSSE EDGED BY WILKES
WILKES-BARRE - - Amelia Farnham scored eight goals and added one assist as the visiting Wilkes University women's lacrosse team posted a 18-15 victory over King's College in a Middle Atlantic Conference matchup Saturday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium.
With the win, Wilkes improved to 3-12 overall and 1-11 in conference play. King's fell to 0-17 and 0-12 in the last game of the 2010 season.
Wilkes raved out to a 6-0 lead, before Chelsea Manes and Andrea Alesso scored to cut the lead to 6-2. The Lady Colonels would strike right back when Farnham netted one at the 15:45 mark to give Wilkes the 7-2 lead. The Lady Monarchs would score three goals by Manes Colleen Davis and Krystina Villarreal to make the score 7-5.
The two teams would trade goals again as Farnham pushed the lead to 8-5 on a goal in the 4;46 mark. Melissa D'Aniello and Davis would combine for two goals for the Lady Monarchs to make the score 8-7 in favor of Wilkes. Stephanie Harkins pushed the score to 9-7 with a goal at the 1:20 mark before Allison Gourniak and Manes would score two goals to tie the two teams going into the half.
In the second half, The Lady Colonels scored three of the first four goals to up the advantage to 12-9, but the Lady Monarchs countered with two straight goals from Andrea Alesso and Villareal. The two teams traded goals again as Wilkes and King's scored a goal each as Manes netted one in the 19:59 mark to make the score 14-12 in favor of Wilkes.
The Lady Colonels would score four goals to push the score to 18-12. King's who would not back down scored three as Shannon Ellis, Gourniak and Villarreal all found the back of the net. Time ran out on the Lady Monarch comeback on a competitive game between two teams.
King's outshot Wilkes 45-42 and had the 23-12 advantage in draws, but Wilkes held the advantage in ground balls by a total of 32-27.
Manes led King's with four goals and three assists while Villarreal followed with three goals and one assist. Gourniak, O'Dougherty, Alesso and Davis all added two goals apiece.
Shannon Ellis and Melissa D'Aniello scored a goal each for the Lady Monarchs. Megan Mundy had a solid showing in net today making 18 saves.
Stephanie Harkins scored five goals and Erica Sundberg scored three goals to lead the Wilkes attack. Cassie Cronin also had a very solid showing in net making 25 saves.
