KING'S MEN'S BASKETBALL POSTS 78-66 WIN OVER PSU WILKES-BARRE
WILKES-BARRE – Freshman guard Kyle Hammonds poured in 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead four players in double figures as host King's College posted a 78-66 win over Penn State Wilkes-Barre in non-league action Monday night in Scandlon Gymnasium.
Following the win, King's improves to 10-7 overall while PSU Wilkes-Barre drops to 11-6 on the season.
King's opened with a six point lead, 13-7, after sophomore Matt Fiorino connected on his first of four three-pointers. The Mountain Lions responded with a 5-0 run over the next two minutes to tie the game at 22 when Frank Peters scored inside with 8:55 left in the half. The Monarchs then used a 12-4 run over the final 6:21 of the half to take a 39-31 advantage to the break. A layup inside from senior Kevin Conroy followed by a Fiorino trey and transition score from freshman Joe Caffrey capped off the run.
Fiorino took over offensively in the first half for King's posting 13 points on 3-for-5 shooting from behind the arc. The Monarchs were in and out of rhythm throughout the half, but managed to force ten PSU Wilkes-Barre turnovers leading to 14 points.
King's extended their lead to 14 points, 47-33, to start the second frame as Hammonds scored five points and junior guard Kyle Stackhouse added a jumper. The lead would swell to 64-41 with 9:50 remaining, as Hammonds made good on an old fashioned three-point play. The Mountain Lions made one last attempt at a comeback as Keith Johnson drilled three straight three-pointers to cut the deficit to 73-59 with 4:03 left to play. The Monarchs cashed in on several attempts at the charity stripe late and a Hammonds score off excellent passing through the PSU Wilkes-Barre press sealed the non-conference victory for King's.
Hammonds was very efficient from the floor, finishing 7-of-13 from the field and 3-for-5 from long range. Fiorino continued his hot shooting finishing with 16 points on four treys. Conroy posted a solid effort inside with 15 points and eight rebounds, while Stackhouse added 11 points, a team-high nine rebounds, and six assists. The Monarchs held a huge advantage on the glass, outrebounding the Mountain Lions 46-36.
Peters led PSU Wilkes-Barre with 16 points and seven rebounds. Johnson followed with 12 points four three-pointers, all in the second half.
King's will finish their non-conference slate Wednesday when they host Penn College at 7:00 p.m. in Scandlon Gymnasium.
