Lady Monarchs Use Big Second Half to Rally Past Frostburg in Consolation Game of Moravian Tourney

BIG SECOND HALF LEADS KING'S WOMEN'S PAST FROSTBURG, 66-52

BETHLEHEM – Celia Rader (left) scored 13 of her game-high 24 points in the second half and Abby Malloy added nine second half points as the King's College women's basketball team overcame a 28-23 halftime deficit to post a 66-52 victory over Frostburg State University in the consolation game of the 10th annual Starters/Moravian Winter Classic Sunday at Moravian College, Bethlehem.

With the win, King's improved to 8-4 on the year while Frostburg slipped to 4-9.

King's struggled offensively in the first half as the Lady Monarchs shot just 22.9 (8-35) percent from the field, including 4-of-17 from three-point range and 3-of-9 from the foul line.

The second half saw the Bobcats use a three-pointer by Lisa Byer and back-to-back baskets by Mindy Sharp to give Frostburg a 37-27 lead with 16:35 remaining.

King's, however, would counter with two straight buckets from Katlin Michaels and a three-pointer by Rader to cut the lead to 38-34. Frostburg answered with a three-pointer by Stephanie Straka and a jumper by Brynn Arnone to build the lead back to 43-34 with 12:30 to play.

King's used a 11-2 run to tie the game at 45-45 with 9:08 on the clock following back-to-back three-pointers from Rader and Malloy as well as a driving lay-up by Lindsay Atchison. King's continued the onslaught as a short jumper from Atchison and three-pointers from Malloy and Rader gave trhe Lady Monarchs a 55-47 lead with 6:18 remaining.  Rader then scored a lay-up and Malloy buried her third three-pointer of the half to stretch the King's lead to 60-47 with 4:57 on the clock, capping a big 26-4 surge over a span of 7:33.

After a Elizabeth Carrington bucket  for Frostburg narrowed the margin to 60-49, Brittany Muscatell and Katlin Michaels put the game away with consecutive baskets to give King's its biggest lead of the game at 64-49 with 2:59 left. In all, the Lady Monarchs outscored the Bobcats 32-9 over the final 7:30 of the contest.

 

Rader, who earned a spot on the all-tournament team, was deadly from long-range, connecting on six three-pointers for the Lady Monarchs while adding nine rebounds. Muscatell scored eight of her 11 points in the second half and added nine rebounds and two assists. Malloy was 0-1 in the first half but finished 3-for-5, including a 3-for-3 effort from three-point range in the second half. Atchison added nine points and five rebounds while Michaels tallied eight points and five boards.

Frostburg was paced by Sharp with 15 points and 13 rebounds while Byer added 11 points and five boards.

 

King's returns to action Thursday when the Lady Monarchs host Gwynedd-Mercy College at 7:00 p.m. in Scandlon Gymnasium.
