LADY MONARCHS REGISTER 82-75 WIN OVER WIDENER
WILKES-BARRE — The King's College women's basketball team prepped for this week's opening of the Freedom Conference schedule as the Lady Monarchs posted a gritty 82-75 non-conference victory over visiting Widener University Monday night in Scandlon Gymnasium.
With the win, King's improved to 4-1 on the year while Widener slipped to 2-3.
Both teams started slowly but Widener managed a 9-5 lead, capped by a pair of foul shots from Vanessa Hejnas and a three-pointer by Joanna Persian with 14:00 left in the first half. King's battled back to tie the score st 10-10 on an offensive rebound and put-back by
Molly Dahl at the 11:54 mark.
The teams battled back and forth and remained deadlocked at 26-26 with 6:54 remaining in the half when Widener used a pair of foul shots from Ally Ferrucci to tie the game up for the seventh time in the opening stanza. With King's leading 33-32 and 4:26 showing on the clock, the Lady Monarchs put together a 6-0 spurt, keyed by back-to-back three-pointers from
Lindsay Atchison and
Samantha Simcox as King's extended the lead to 39-32 with 0:48 to go. Persiano knocked down a jumper for the Pride to cut King's lead to 39-34 at the break.
In the second half, King's slowly stretched the lead to 49-42 following a driving lay-up from
Katlin Michaels and another Atchison three-pointer with 16:14 left in the contest. Widener, however, closed to within 49-48 after a traditional three-point play by Courtney Colella at 14:50.
The Lady Monarchs countered with a 9-1 run on the strength of five points from Atchison and a bucket by
Paige Carlin to push the score to 58-49 with 11:50 to play. Widener, however, refused to go away and responded with a 14-5 surge to tie the game at 63-63 on a Persiano jumper at the 7:37 mark.
With the Lady Monarchs clinging to a 70-69 lead with 4:53 left to play, King's used a decisive 9-2 spurt, keyed by five points by Atchison and four more from Michaels to give the home squad a 79-71 lead with 0:56 to go. Widener cut the lead to 80-75 on a bucket by Francesca Lee at 0:23 but
Marissa Manning sealed the game for King's when her two foul shots with 0:12 closed out the scoring, giving the Lady Monarchs a 82-75 win.
Atchison posted a career-high 25 points with six rebounds in the game. Carlin added 15 points, three rebounds, and two assists while Michaels added 11 points, six boards, five assists, and four steals.
Samantha Simcox contributed with nine points and 10 rebounds while
Marissa Manning tallied eight points and three blocks. Muscatell chipped in with seven points, five rebounds, and two assists.
King's, however, allowed Widener to remain in the game as the Lady Monarchs were unable to take advantage of a substantial advantage at the foul line. King's made just 24-of-45 free throws, compared to 22-of-29 foul shots by Widener.
Widener was paced by Kate Dellinger with 21 points and 13 rebounds while Persiano followed with 17 points and six boards. Hejnas added 13 points while Lindsay Pepino chipped in with nine points and five rebounds.
King's opens its Freedom Conference schedule Wednesday when the Lady Monarchs travel to Doylestown to face 5-0 Delaware Valley College at 6:00 p.m.
