KING'S WOMEN RALLY PAST MISERICORDIA, FORCE FOUR-WAY FIRST-PLACE TIE HEADING INTO FINAL GAME OF REGULAR-SEASON

WILKES-BARRE — For all intents and purposes, the game was over. The King's College women's basketball team was a beaten squad.

After opening the game with a 10-0 lead, the Lady Monarchs were outscored by visiting Misericordia University 40-17 over the next 23:16, spanning both halves.

Shot after shot would not fall. Head coach Brian Donoghue burned four of his six total timeouts in the first half alone trying to right the ship.  Nothing seemed to work as Misericordia appeared well on its way to a one-sided victory.

A funny thing happened on the way to defeat, however. King's turned up the defensive pressure and the tide began to change.

The Lady Monarchs overcame a 13-point deficit over the final 13 minutes of play as King's managed to pull out a stunning 52-48 comeback victory over Misericordia University Tuesday night in Scandlon Gym.

With the win, King's improved to 15-9 overall and joined a four-way tie for first-place in the Freedom Conference. The Lady Monarchs now sit atop the league with Misericordia, DeSales, and Manhattanville, who each sport identical 9-4 conference records heading into Saturday's regular-season finale. In the process, all of the teams involved clinched a Freedom Conference post-season tournament berth.

Misericordia, which took a 27-20 lead into the halftime break, slowly extended its advantage in the second half and used a three-pointer by Tyanne McDaniel to build a 40-27 lead with 13:03 left in the contest.   King's, however, upped the defensive intensity and held the Cougars to just eight points over the remainder of the game.

Offensively, the Monarchs Monarchs chipped away at the lead and five straight points by Celia Rader, a traditional three-point play from Katlin Michaels and a driving lay-up from Lindsay Atchison eventually tied the game at 43-43 with 5:19 to play.

King's later took the lead for good when a pair of foul shots from Michaels gave the Lady Monarchs a 47-46 lead with 3:19 on the clock, After a Cougar turnover, Brittany Muscatell drained a critical three-pointer to push the score to 50-46 with 2:42 remaining. Misericordia cut the lead to 50-48 on a pair of Christina Marks foul shots at the 1:30 mark

After the teams traded missed opportunities over the next three possessions, the Cougars attempted to tie the score with an inside pass to Marks with 0:09 left but a turnover was hauled in my Michaels who was fouled with 0:03 on the clock. The sophomore guard would seal the win by making both offerings, putting the icing on a tremendous comeback effort.

Michaels paced King's with 17 points while Rader added 10. Muscatell netted nine points with five rebounds and  three assists,  Marks led Misericordia with 17 points and eight boards while  Tyann McDaniel added 13.

King's closes out the regular-season Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. home matchup with Wilkes.
