KING'S WOMEN'S LACROSSE CAPTURES FIRST MAC WIN WITH 14-12 VICTORY OVER LYCOMING
WILLIAMSPORT -- Sophomore Krystina Villarreal scored five goals and assisted on another to lead visiting King's College to a 14-12 MAC win at Lycoming College Wednesday afternoon.
With the win King's improves to 2-4 overall and 1-3 in MAC play. Lycoming drops to 1-7 overall and 1-3 in conference games. The win also marks the first MAC win for King's in nearly three years. The Lady Monarchs' last MAC win came by virtue of an 18-16 decision over cross-town rival Wilkes on April 22, 2008.
After Lycoming took an early 2-0 lead, King's responded to tie the game with goals from Villarreal and Chelsea Manes with 26:24 left in the half. Two more Lady Warrior goals were answered by two consecutive King's goals when Andrea Alesso and Manes found the back of the net to tie the game at 4-4.
Villarreal would add her second tally of the contest and Amanda Harney added her first to end the Lady Monarch scoring in the first half. Lycoming took a slim 7-6 lead to the break.
Villarreal posted her third goal of the game to tie the score at 7-7, and two minutes later Sarah O'Doherty gave King's their first lead of the contest at the 27:40 mark. The Lady Monarchs continued the offensive onslaught as Villarreal, O'Doherty, Manes, and Harney (twice) rang the back of the net to power King's to a 13-8 advantage with 15:03 left in the game.
Lycoming used a late surge to pull to within one at 13-12, before Villarreal ended the Lady Warrior hopes with her fifth and final tally of the game with 1:02 left.
Manes finished with three goals and two assists, while Harney added three goals. O'Doherty posted two goals and one helper.
King's outshot Lycoming 33-25, while the Lady Warriors held a 44-35 advantage in ground balls. King's did an excellent job in the circle winning 16 draws to Lycoming's 12.
The Lady Monarchs look to continue their fine play Saturday when they host MAC foe Eastern University at McCarthy Stadium at 1:00 p.m.
