KING'S WOMEN'S LACROSSE EDGES MANHATTANVILLE 12-11
WILKES-BARRE -- Chelsea Manes scored three goals and added three asissts including the helper on the game-winning tally as host King's College posted a 12-11 win over Manhattanville College Tuesday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium.
With the win King's improves to 6-8 overall and 4-7 in MAC play. Manhattanville drops to 7-7 overall and 6-5 in league play.
King's took an early 1-0 lead thanks to a Krystina Villarreal strike at the 29:12 mark of the first half. Manhattanville answered with three straight goals to take their first lead of the contest at 3-1 with 19:14 left in the half. Sarah O'Doherty found the back of the net at the 18:07 mark to cut the deficit to 3-2 off an assist from Chelsea Manes.
After two more Valiant goals, King's Amanda Harney notched her first goal of the contest to edge the Lady Monarchs to within two, 5-3. Manhattanvile used three more unanswered goals in the game's next four minutes of play to open up a 8-3 lead with 10:43 left in the half.
King's then used a six goal spurt to cut the Valiant lead to 9-8 as the teams entered the break. Goals from Villarreal, O'Doherty, Alesso, and Manes (twice) capped off the scoring tear to end the half.
The teams would go scoreless in the first 14 minutes of the second half before the Valiants struck net to take a 10-8 lead. Allison Gourniak took a Villarreal pass and beat Manhattanville keeper Kirstin Betsill to bring the Lady Monarchs to within 10-9. Another Valiant goal off a free position attempt kept the visitors ahead, 11-9.
Manes added her third goal of the game to keep King's close, 11-10 with 4:31 left. The second half comeback would be complete when Manes found Villarreal off a free position attempt to tie the game at 11-11 with 3:15 on the clock.
From there, King's controlled the draw and attacked the Valiant net as Manes found Harney cutting to goal for the eventual game-winner with 1:05 left.
Manes led the way with three goals and three assists, while Villarreal added three goals and two helpers. King's goalie Megan Withrow made eight saves in net for the winners.
King's will complete their season schedule Saturday when they host Messiah College at 1:00 p.m. at McCarthy Stadium.
