KING'S WOMEN GO ON ROAD TO DEFEAT DEFENDING CHAMPION DESALES, IMPROVE TO 3-0 IN LEAGUE PLAY

CENTER VALLEY -- Over the years the King's College and DeSales University women's basketball teams have played numerous hard-nosed, tightly fought contests. Wednesday night was no exception.

King's fought off a poor shooting night by forcing 32 turnovers as the Lady Monarchs posted an important 63-56 road win over the four-time defending Freedom Conference champion Bulldogs in a battle of league unbeatens Wednesday night in Center Valley.

With the win, King's improved to 10-3 overall and 3-0 in Freedom Conference games while DeSales slipped to 7-7 and 2-1 in league games.
King's opened the game with buckets on its first two possessions from Marissa Manning and Brittany Muscatell. After the teams traded possessions, Lindsay Atchison drained a three-pointer and Samantha Simcox made a short jumper to give the Lady Monarchs a 9-0 lead after just 3:53.

The Lady Monarchs would struggle offensively the remainder of the half but led throughout the opening stanza. King's would muster only 20 points the remainder of the half to take a 29-25 lead into the break.

In the second half the defensive struggled continued and both teams shot poorly. King's used a three-pointer by Simcox and two free throws from Paige Carlin as King's built a 32-26 lead with 16:02 to play. After over three minutes of scoreless play, Simcox found the bottom of the net with a jumper to give King's a 36-26 advantage with 13:06 left in the contest.

Colleen Gavin brought the Bulldogs to within 36-29 with a traditional three-point play at the 12:52 mark.

After the teams traded baskets, Molly Dahl buried a three-pointer with 11:19 remaining to push the lead to 41-31 lead. DeSales fought back, however, and cut the lead to 46-45 with 5:10 on the clock following a inside basket from Cherelle Simmons.

Celia Rader made one-of-two foul shots to give King's a 47-45 advantage with 5:10 on the clock. Two possessions later Rader was fouled again and this time made good on both attempts as the Lady Monarchs tooj a 48-45 lead with 4:05 to play. After a DeSales turnover, Rader came though with a huge three-pointer with 3:28 left for a 52-45 lead.

Sondrine Glovas scored for DeSales but Marissa Manning countered with a bucket for King'swith 2:03 to play as the Lady Monarchs lead grew to 54-47. After a DeSales basket, Carlin made a pair of foul shots to push the score to 56-49 with 1:08 on the clock. Glovas scored again for DeSales at 0:58, but Manning came through for King's with a quick inside basket with 0:49 left to push the score to 58-51. Carlin then posted an important steal and was immediately fouled, converting two more charity posses to up the lead to 60-51 with 0:39 to play.

After a Taylor Greene lay-up brought the Bulldogs to within 60-53, Brittany Muscatell went to the foul line for King's and made one-of-two foul shots for a 61-53 Lady Monarch advantage. After Glovas canned a three-pointer for DeSales with 0:18 to play, Michaels was fouled with 0:14 remaining and sealed the victory by giving King's a 63-56 lead.

Simcox led King's with 14 points and seven rebounds while Manning followed with 13 points and seven boards. Rader finished with 10 points and two steals while Carlin also tallied 10 points and five rebounds. Michaels chipped in with six points, nine rebounds, and four assists to pace the Lady Monarchs.

King's shot just 36.2 (21-58) percent from the floor but struggled mightily form three-point range, converting just 22.7 (5-22) from three-point land. King's also struggled with the ball, surviving a season-high 28 turnovers.

Alex Suk led DeSales with 10 points and six rebounds while Cherelle Simmons tallied eight points and 12 rebounds. Glovas, who entered the game averaging a team-high 17 points per-game, was held to just seven points on the night.

King's will return to action Saturday at 1:00 p.m. when the Lady Monarchs host fellow league unbeaten Eastern University (10-2, 3-0), a 58-57 winner at home over Misericordia Wednesday night.
