MICHAELS GAME-WINNER AT BUZZER PROPELS KING'S WOMEN TO 51-49 WIN AT MANHATTANVILLE, LADY MONARCHS REMAIN UNBEATEN IN FREEDOM PLAY
PURCHASE, NY — Junior guard
Katlin Michaels connected on the game-winning shot as time expired as the King's College women's basketball team pulled out an important 51-49 Freedom Conference road victory over Manhattanville College Saturday afternoon in Purchase, NY.
With the win, King's improved to 14-3 overall and remained the only unbeaten team in the Freedom Conference with a 6-0 mark. Manhattanville, meanwhile, slipped to 6-10 and 1-5 in league games. The victory also marked King's first win at Manhattanville since the Lady Monarchs won 59-48 on January 30, 2008.
With King's trailing 48-45 after Manhattanville's Kelli Hyjek converted a pair of foul shots, King's used a jumper from
Celia Rader to cut the score to 48-47 with 1:55 on the clock. After a King's foul, Hyjek made the second of two foul shots to give the Valiants a 49-47 with 0:34 to play. The Lady Monarchs, however, quickly advanced the ball past mid-court and Michaels drove the lane to score a lay-up to tie the score at 49-49 with 0:23 left in regulation.
As it has much of the season, King's defense came up big as the Lady Monarchs full-court press forced a Valiant turnover as
Samantha Simcox corralled a steal with just 0:14 to play. From there, Michaels again drove the lane and scored on a running jumper with time expiring as King's walked away with the victory.
The game began auspiciously for King's as the contest, scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start, began a half-hour late after the King's team bus arrived late due to poor travel conditions in the morning snow.
The Lady Monarchs forged a 14-6 lead with 14:06 left in the opening half following a traditional three-point play by
Marissa Manning. From there King's went cold and scored just four points over the next 12 minutes as Manhattanville took a 23-18 lead with 3:39 remaining in the opening stanza.
Paige Carlin scored four straight points for King's to cut the Valiant lead to 23-22 at the 0:47 mark. Courtney Turner countered with a jumper for Manhattanville to push the lead to 25-22 with 0:46 on the clock, but Carlin made good on a pair of free throws with 0:23 to go as King's trailed 25-24 at the break.
King's shot just 25.8 (8-31) percent in the first half while Manhattanville converted on 38.5 (10-26) percent it its attempts from the field.
In the second half King's came out of the locker room with a 6-1 spurt to take a 30-26 lead following a bucket by
Brittany Muscatell. But eh Valiants answered with a 7-0 run to recapture the lead at 33-30 on four straight points by Stephanie Vaiano with 14:36 left in the contest.
From there the teams remained with a basket of each other as the Valiants used a Taylor Wilson jumper to build a 41-38 advantage with 7:17 on the clock. But King's countered with a 7-0 run to take a 45-41 lead on five straight points from Simcox and a lay-up by Rader with 3:29 left. But Manhattanville again answered with a three-pointer by Taylor and a lay-up by Hyjek following a King's turnover to give the Valiants a 46-45 lead. Hyjek would then hit two free throws to push the score to 48-45, setting up King's late-game heroics.
Michaels led King's with 16 points, seven rebounds, and two assists while Simcox tallied 12 points, seven rebounds, five steals, and three assists. Carlin added six points while Manning finished with five to pace the King's attack. King's was able to rally by shooting 46.4 (13-28) percent in the second half.
Manhattanville was led by Wilson with 13 points while Hyjek and Vaiano chipped in with 11 and 10 points respectively.
King's returns to action Wednesday night with a big Freedom Conference showdown with local rival Misericordia. The Cougars stand at 8-7 overall but are 5-1 in the Freedom Conference after a 86-57 home win over Delaware Valley on Saturday.
