KING'S WOMEN EDGED BY SCRANTON IN BATLE OR AREA POWERS

SCRANTON – The King's College women's basketball team was unable to make a 29-25 half-time lead hold up as the host University of Scranton rallied for a 64-59 victory in a battle of local Division III powers Tuesday night in Scranton.

With the win, Scranton improved to 3-0 on the year while the Lady Monarchs slipped to 2-1.

After coming out of the locker room to start the second half, King's used a bucket from Katlin Michaels and a three-pointer by Celia Rader to build a 34-29 lead with 18:09 remaining.

Scranton countered with a 9-2 run and took a 38-36 lead on a jumper by Alison Sweeney. After King's tied the score at 38-38 on an inside basket from Marisa Manning, Scranton used a decisive 13-0 run to build a 51-38 after a traditional three-point play from 6-foot-1 Division I transfer Meredith Mesaris.

The Lady Monarchs battled back and cut the score to one point on two occasions, the last coming with 3:12 remaining when a Manning lay-up trimmed the lead to 56-55. But the Lady Royals used three-pointers from Mesaris and Katherine Torto to push the Scranton lead to 62-57 with 0:38 on the clock. King's came to within 62-59 on a pair of foul shots by Michaels with 0:15 left but Scranton made two-of-four foul shots the rest of the way to seal the victory.

Michaels led King's with 18 points, seven assists, six rebounds, and three steals. Manning followed with 14 points and three boards while Celia Rader contributed with 12 points.

Scranton was led by Mesaris with 20 points and six rebounds, while Erin Boggan, another 6-foot-1 Division I transfer, added 18 points and 11 boards. Sweeney chipped in with 12 points and six boards.

King's managed to stay close despite being outrebounded by a massive 51-28 margin but the Lady Monarch pressure forced Scranton into 25 turnovers while King's coughed up the ball just 10 times.

The Lady Monarchs will be idle for Thanksgiving break and will return to the court Monday when King's makes its home debut against Gwynedd-Mercy College at 6:00 p.m. in Scandlon Gymnasium.
