LEBANON VALLEY HANDS KING'S 34-19 DEFEAT IN MONARCHS FINAL HOME GAME

WILKES-BARRE — Visiting Lebanon Valley College broke open a 7-7 game with 20 unanswered points in the second quarter as the Flying Dutchmen posted a 34-19 victory in the Monarchs 2012 home finale Saturday at McCarthy Stadium.

With the win, Lebanon Valley improved to 6-3 overall and 5-3 in the Middle Atlantic Conference while the Monarchs slipped to 2-7 and 2-6.

King's struck first on the second possession of the game when the Monarchs marched 65 yards to the end zone. A 43-yard pass from Tyler Hartranft to Dan Kempa on the Monarchs' third play from scrimmage gave King's a first down at the Dutchmen 10. Three plays later Hartranft found tight end Matt Henry in the end zone for a touchdown. Kevin Mulvihill made good on the conversion kick as the Monarchs took a 7-0 lead with 9:58left in the first quarter.

Lebanon Valley was forced to punt on its next possession but Jake Ziegler delivered a game-changing punt when his 49-yard effort went out of bounds at the King's one-half yard line. With the Monarchs trapped deep, King's was unable to move the ball and was forced to punt from deep in its own end zone.

Mulvihill's punt traveled 32 yards and the Dutchmen took over with excellent field position at the Monarch 37. Lebanon Valley used seven plays to reach the Monarch one where, on the next play, Evan Fink scored on a one-yard touchdown run. Sean Fakete added the point after as the Dutchmen tied the score at 7-7 with 2:12 remaining in the opening period.

The Monarchs were unable to move on their next possession and were forced to punt. The Monarchs would only manage a 22-yard punt and the Dutchmen again began its drive in good field position, this time at the King's 45. After four plays moved the ball to the Monarch 23, Leon Kyte hit Jake Ziegler for a 23-yard scoring strike to put Lebanon Valley ahead. Fakete converted the extra-point kick as the Dutchmen took a 14-7 lad with 13:02 remaining in the half.

King's assumed possession at its own 33 but a sack and subsequent penalty pushed the Monarchs back to their own 22. Forced to again punt, Mulvihill's offering into the wind traveled 30 yards and Kelly Saylor followed with a 12-yard return, one again giving Lebanon Valley excellent field position at the Monarch 40.

Lebanon Valley advanced 35 yards on six plays to the King's five-yard line, but the drive stalled as the Flying Dutchmen settled for a 22-yard field goal by Fakete, giving LVC a 17-7 lead with 9:11 left in the first-half.

After the teams traded punts over the next three possessions, Lebanon Valley took over at its own 20 with 4:38 left in the half. The Dutchmen used a mixture of short runs and passes to move to the 36. But on the next play, Kyte found Joe Miller for 29 yards to the King's 35. After a sack, Kyle then found Pete Panichi out of the backfield for a short completion but the senior tailback broke a series of tackles and raced down the right sideline for a 39-yard touchdown play.  Fakete added the point after with 1:30 on the clock to push the score to 24-7.

The Monarchs tried to salvage a score before the half-time break but two pass incompletions and a sack forced King's punt from its own 18-yard line. Another short, 32-yard Monarch punt gave the Dutchmen possession at the King's 4 with 0:55 on the clock.   Lebanon Valley moved to the King's 23 where the drive stalled, but Fakete entered the game to attempt a 40-yard field goal into a stiff wind with 0:11 to go. Fakete drilled the attempt high into the wind and the ball sailed just past the crossbar for three-points, enabling Lebanon Valley to take a 27-7 lead into the break.

After surrendering 65 yards on King's opening drive of the game, the Dutchmen defense shut down the Monarchs the rest of the half, yielding only 35 yards on the next 19 offensive plays.

In the second half King's needed to recapture the momentum and the Monarchs got exactly what they needed when Dan Kempa returned the second half kickoff 82 yards for a touchdown, cutting the lead to 27-13 after missing the extra-point.

The score remained the same through the remainder of the third quarter as King's missed out on two scoring opportunities, the first coming when Ryan Kelly recovered a fumble at the LVC 45 and the Monarchs drove to the Dutchmen 32. There the drive stalled as the Dutchmen took over on downs. The second came on King's next possession when the Monarchs blocked a Lebanon Valley punt and took over at the Dutchmen 47. King's moved to the LVC 33, but on a third-and-nine play, Hartranft fumbled while being sacked and Lebanon Valley recovered to end the threat.

Lebanon Valley would add distance early in the fourth quarter when the Dutchmen used an eight-play, 74-yard drive, capped by a 21-yard scoring pass from Brian Murphy to Joey Miller as the lead grew to 34-13 with 11:24 remaining in the contest.

King's would manage its final score on its next possession, keyed by runs of 13 and 11 yards by Judens Goimbert and a nine-yard carry by Kyle McGrath. On the next play Hartranft found Adam Kudlacik in the left corner of the end zone for a 29-yard scoring play.

After the teams traded punts on the next three possessions, King's had its last scoring chance of the day. The Monarchs drove from its own 27 and keyed by a 23-yard pass from Hartranft toto Josh Sanders, King's moved to the Lebanon Valley 37. After a two-yard run and two incomplete passes, King's faced a fourth-and-eight from the  Dutchmen 35.  From there Hartranft dropped back to pass and was forced from the pocket by the LVC pass rush. The Monarch sophomore would loft a pass to McGrath which fell incomplete and Lebanon Valley took over and ran out the remaining 1:22 of the game.

Lebanon Valley out-gained King's 367-to-209 in total yards and held a 15-10 advantage in first downs.   The Dutchmen also ran 74 plays compared to 54 for King's.

The Monarchs defense played admirably as LVC entered the game fourth in the MAC with a 168.6 yards-per-game average but were held to 92 yards.  The Monarchs, however, gave up 275 passing yards in the contest. Kyte completed 14-of-26 passes for 206 yards and two touchdowns while Murphy was 3-of-3 for 69 yards and one score.  Miller caught seven passes for 96 yards and one touchdown while Zeigler added six catches for 91 yards and one score.

For King's, McGrath was held to 43 yards on 16 carries, pushing his season total to 879 yards. Hartranft was 11-of-30 for 155 yards with two touchdowns and zero interceptions. Kempa paced King's with three receptions for 72 yards, along with his 82 yard kickoff return. Sanders added three catches for 36 yards.
