KING'S WOMEN'S LACROSSE OPENS SEASON WITH 21-8 WIN OVER HOOD
FREDERICK, MD -- Chelsea Manes and Amanda Harney scored six goals and dished out three assists each to power the King's College women's lacrosse team to a season-opening 21-8 victory over host Hood College Saturday in Frederick, Md.
With King's trailing 1-0 Chelsea Manes and Krystina Villarreal scored back-to-back to give the Lady Monarchs a 2-1 lead. After the teams traded three straight goals. King's forged ahead 7-3 thanks to a pair of goals by Harney, and one each by Villarreal and Mariah Masciarelli at with 11:45 remaining in the first half.
After Hood countered with a pair of scores, the Lady Monarchs responded with two of their own from Masciarelli and Villarreal to build a 9-6 lead at the break. King's continued to control play coming out of the locker room, adding three more goals from Manes, Villarreal and Harney to forge ahead 12-6.
With King's holding a 16-8 lead, the Lady Monarchs closed out the final 11:09 of the game with a 5-0 run to bring the game to its final score.
With nine points each, both Manes and Harney tied the second-highest single-game scoring mark in King's women's lacrosse history. Villarreal added five goals and three assists; Masciarelli contributed with four goals and two assists, while Caitlin Haening chipped in with one assist.
King's goalie Megan Withrow posted six saves on the day while the Lady Monarchs tallied 25 ground balls as a team, paced by Harney and Manes with five each. King's outshot Hood 41-15.
