KING'S WOMEN'S BASKETBALL CLINCHES FREEDOM CONFERENCE TOP SEED WITH 79-69 VICTORY OVER DEL-VAL
WILKES-BARRE — The road to the Freedom Conference championship will go through Wilkes-Barre.
The King's College women's basketball team overcame a four-point halftime deficit with a 16-0 run to start the second half as the Lady Monarchs posted a 79-69 victory over visiting Delaware Valley College Wednesday night in Scandlon Gymnasium.
With the win, King's improved to 19-3 overall and 11-0 in the Freedom Conference for the first time in program history. The victory, King's 12th straight on the season, also enabled the Lady Monarchs to clinch the top seed and home court advantage when the Freedom Conference playoffs begin in two weeks. Delaware Valley, meanwhile, slipped to 12-10 overall and 3-8 in league play while officially being eliminated from the post-season race.
King's jumped out to a quick 9-3 lead to start the game after back-to-back three-pointers from
Samantha Simcox and
Lindsay Atchison. But Delaware Valley battled back and outscored the Lady Monarchs 34-24 over the final 14 minutes of the opening stanza to take a 37-33 lead into the half-time break.
In the second half King's came flying out of the gates with relentless full-court pressure defense and forced numerous Aggie turnovers. A three-pointer by Simcox and a driving lay-up from
Marissa Manning started the assault. After Simcox made one-of-two free throws to give King's a 39-37, Lady Monarch senior
Paige Carlin was fouled driving to the basket and the Aggies were called for a foul. Seconds later a Delaware Valley was player was whistled for a technical foul in what proved to be the turning point of the game. Carlin sank free throws from the technical foul, then added two more off the personal foul to increase the Lady Monarch lead to 43-37 with 16:09 left in the contest.
King's seized the momentum and used an inside basket from Atchison, a driving lay-up by
Katlin Michaels, and another inside bucket from Carlin to push the score to 49-37 with 14:05 on the clock. The Aggies cut the lead to nine points on three different occasions until Carlin scored on a short jumper and Manning made one-of-two free throws to give the Lady Monarchs a 56-44 lead with 9:31 to play.
King's would eventually build its biggest lead of the game at 18 points when
Ashley Davies scored four of King's next six points to up the score to 69-51 with 4:46 remaining. The Aggies would close to within eight when a traditional three-point play by Brittany Batinieri cut the lead to 73-65 with 1:40 to play. But King's countered with a big three-pointer by
Celia Rader to push the score back to 76-65 at the 1:13 mark.
Carlin led four King's double-figure scorers with a team-high 20 points and six rebounds and moved to within 14 points of reaching the coveted 1,000-point plateau. Michaels tallied 13 points, six rebounds, eight assists, and three steals while Simcox contributed with 13 points, seven rebounds, and two steals. Davies netted 13 points and two boards while Rader chipped in with 10 points.
Brenna Coll led the Aggies with 22 points and eight rebounds while Emily Soper added 12 points and 10 boards. Sarah Decasale posted 10 points and four rebouds while Battinieri chipped in with nine points and seven assists.
King's will play its final home regular-season game of the season on Saturday when King's celebrates Senior Day with a 1:00 p.m. Contest against Manhattanville.
