KING'S WOMEN'S LAXERS CLINCH FREEDOM CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT BERTH WITH WIN OVER WILKES

WILKES-BARRE -- Amanda Harney tallied six goals and three assists while Chelsea Manes added five scores to power the King's College women's lacrosse team to a 22-14 victory over visiting Wilkes University Tuesday at McCarthy Stadium in the Betzler Athletic Complex.

With the win, the Lady Monarchs improved to 10-6 overall and clinched a Freedom Conference playoff berth with a 4-1 league ledger. It marks the first post-season berth
for the Lady Monarchs since the 2006 season.


King's took a 3-0 lead on goals from Emily Foley, Mariah Masciarelli, and Amanda Harney. Wilkes countered with scores from Carly Smith, Gabby Ford, and Keri Meerholz to knot the game at 3-3 with 21:34 left in the first half.

The Lady Monarchs countered with another three
-goal spurt with two scores coming from Masciarelli and one from Chelsea Manes as the Lady Monarch lead grew to 6-3. After the teams traded goals on the next three possessions, King's went on a 4-0 surge thanks to two goals from Villarreal and one each from Foley and Catherine McMahon to build a 11-5 lead with 6:12 on the clock. The Lady Colonels then outscored King's 2-1 the rest of the way to close to within 12-7 at the break.

Wilkes used a pair of goals by Ford and another from Smith to close the gap to 12-10 with 22:04 left in the contest. King's regained the momentum with two scores from Harney and one by Masciarelli
to push the lead to 15-10 at the 17:09 mark.


After a Wilkes goal by Smith, the Lady Monarchs rattled off four unanswered scores, two by Manes and one each from Villarreal and Harney to stretch the advantage to 19-11 with 10:44 to play.

at 9:07, King's sealed the victory by outscoring the Lady Colonels 3-2 the rest of the way.

Manes now has 62 goals and is within three of breaking the school record of 64 goals set by Lindsay Sabo in 2007.  Harney, meanwhile, equaled the second-highest single-game points total (9) in program history.

Krystine Villarreal
Manes and Villarreal have now each topped the 100-goal mark for their careers with Manes tallying 120 while Villarreal has found the back of the net 106 times. They become the first King's teammates to have 100-career goals since Lindsay Sabo '07 and Grace King '08.

Masciarelli
helped lead the King's attack with four goals and one assist while Foley added four goals and one assist while Villarreal contributed three goals.. King's goalie Megan Withrow made 12 saves in net.

Wilkes was paced by Smith with six goals and one assist while Ford added five goals and four assists. Meerholz
chipped in with two goals and one assist for the Lady Colonels. Wilkes goalie Cassie Cronin was outstanding in the game, making 20 saves.

King's will close out the regular-season Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. conference matchup
at first-place FDU-Florham. A King's victory would forge a tie and the Lady Monarchs would earn the top seed for the Freedom Conference Tournament.
