LADY MONARCH CAGERS WIN 7TH STRAIGHT WITH 74-56 TRIUM[H OVER MANHATTANVILLE
WILKES-BARRE — The King's College women's basketball team placed four players in double-digit scoring as the Lady Monarchs posted an important 74-56 victory over visiting Manhattanville College Saturday in Scandlon Gymnasium.
The win was King's seventh straight of the season as the Lady Monarchs improved to 12-4 and 5-1 in Freedom Conference play. The victory also enabled King's to remain a game behind first-place FDU-Florham in the league standings as the Devils remained unbeaten in Freedom games with a 64-47 triumph over Wilkes.
The game was played on even terms for much of the first half. King's held an 18-13 lead before Manhattanville used a three-pointer from Taylor Miller to cut the score to 18-16 with 11:13 remaining in the opening stanza.
From there, the Lady Monarch used an inside bucket by Jan Fabian, one-of-two foul shots from
Celia Rader, and
Molly Dahl lay-up to take a 23-16 advantage with 9:50 on the clock. King's eventually took a 10-point lead when two foul shots from
Katlin Michaels and an inside bucket by
Lindsay Atchison pushed the score to 33-23 at the 5:27 mark. After the Valiants trimmed the score to 38-32 the Lady Monarchs closed out the half with a 5-0 surge to take a 43-32 lead at the break.
In the second half Manhattanville chipped away and cut the lead to 49-43 on a Taylor Wilson lay-up with 13:28 to play. But the Lady Monarchs regained control on a short jumper from Atchison, four straight points by
Tara Zdancewicz, a pair of free throws by Michaels and a three-pointer from
Meagan Boccio, capping a 11-0 run to give King's a 60-43 with 6:19 left in the contest.
King's continued to dominate and built its biggest lead of the day at 23 points when a lay-up from Boccio and a pair of foul shots by Michaels upped the score to 71-48with 2:29 left in the contest.
Michaels toped King's with 15 points, seven rebounds and five steals while Atchison had a big day with 14 points, eight rebounds, eight assists, and two steals.
Celia Rader and Boccio added 10 points each while
Molly Dahl chipped in with seven points and seven rebounds. King's defense forced Manhattanville into 29 turnovers while the Lady Monarchs coughed up the ball just 12 times in the game. King's also held a 47-42 rebounding advantage.
Manhattanville was led by Wilson with 20 points while Alyson Caiazzo added 10 points and a game-high 20 rebounds.
King's returns home Monday when the Lady Monarchs play their final non-conference game of the season against Keystone College at 7:00 p.m. in Scandlon Gym.
