KING'S WOMEN FALL TO 17TH RANKED FDU-FLORHAM, 76-57
WILKES-BARRE -- The defending champion FDU-Florham women's basketball team forced 23 turnovers enroute to posting a 76-57 victory over host King's College in a Freedom Conference matchup Saturday in Scandlon Gymnasium.
The victory enabled the 17th rained Devils to improve to 8-0 overall and 2-0 in league competition. King's, meanwhile, slipped to 3-5 and 0-2 in Freedom Conference games.
King's held tough in the early going as the teams were tied at 8-8 after Lady Monarch freshman
Shae Grim canned a three-pointer with 14:02 left in the opening stanza. From there the Devils went on a 16-4 run and built a 24-12 advantage with 6:59 remaining after a jumper from reigning Freedom Conference "Player of the Year" Kyra Dayon.
The Lady Monarchs trimmed the lead to eight points on three occasions, the last coming at the 1:55 mark of the half on an inside bucket by
Marissa Manning to trim the lead to 33-25. FDU, however, forced two critical turnovers over the final minute of play closed out the half with a 5-0 spurt to take a 38-25 lead at the break.
The Devils came out in the second half and immediate push the lead to 15 points when Rachel Groom scored inside to give FDU a 40-25 advantage. King's would slowly battle back, countering with a 14-6 run to cut the lead to 46-39 after a pair of free throws from
Kasey Seitz and a two more foul shots y Manning with 12:46 remaining.
But FDU's pressure proved to be the difference as the Devils answered with a 16-1 run and forged ahead 62-40 with 6:21 left after back-to-back buckets by Groom. FDU eventually built its biggest lead of the game at 24 points when a three-pointer by Robin Peoples gave FDU a 72-48 advantage with 2:22 to go.
Kayla Feairheller led King's with 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting while Seitz added 11 points, five rebounds, and six assists. Grim tallied 10 points and 11 rebounds while Manning finished with nine points and three boards.
Jennifer Fabian chipped in with four points, 10 rebounds, and four blocks. It marked Fabian's fifth straight game with at least 10 boards and the sixth time in eight contests this season she has posted double-digit rebounds.
Groom led FDU with 14 points, six rebounds, and three blocks while Dayon posted 13 points and 12 rebounds. Jalessa Lewis chipped in with 10 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and four steals.
King's will now be idle during final exams week and will return to the court December 30-31 as the U.S. Capital Holiday Classic at Catholic University in Washington D.C.
