KING'S WOMEN'S LACROSSE WINS SEASON OPENER OVER ALVERNIA
?WILKES-BARRE -- Amanda Harney scored five goals and dished out three assists to power the King's College women's lacrosse team to a season-opening 16-13 victory over visiting Alvernia University Tuesday at McCarthy Stadium.
King's opened the scoring just 2:29 into the game on an unassisted goal by Harney. After Alvernia tied the game six minutes later, King's used back-to-back scores from Catherine McMahon and Harney just 0:25 apart to build a 3-1 lead with 20:35 left in the half.
Alvernia cut the lead to 3-2 on a Hannah Dorsch goal just 0:12 later but the Lady Monarchs used an unassisted goal from Krystina Villarreal and an Emily Foley score off an assist by Harney to give King's a 5-2 lead with 8:16 on the clock.
King's then built its biggest lead of the half when Harney scored again to push the score to 6-2 with 7:06. Alvernia would trim the lead to 6-4 at the break on goals by Alyssa Verillo and Nora Walsh, the later coming with just 0:32 left. Harney finished the half with three goals and one assist for the Lady Monarchs.
In the second half the teams traded goals until the Crusaders took their first lead of the day at on three straight goals to push the score to 10-9 with 17:56 on a Verillo score. But King's responded with three goals of its own as Harney scored twice and Mariah Masciarelli also struck net to give the Lady Monarchs a 12-10 advantage with 13:26 to play.
After Alvernia scored twice more to tie the game at 12-12 with 12:52 remaining, King's answered with a goal from Villarreal and two straight from Manes to give the Lady Monarchs a 15-12 lead with 5:54 to go. The Crusaders cut the lead to 15-13 on a Julie Sutton score with 2:27 left but Harney sealed the victory with a score with 0:47 to play.
Villarreal followed with four goals and one assist to help pace King's while Chelsea Manes and Mariah Masciarelli tallied two goals and one assist apiece. Emily Foley also chipped in with one assist while Catherine McMahon contributed one goal.
Alvernia outshot King's 37-26 in the game. Lady Monarch first-year goalie Alisa Marino made 14 stops in goal.
King's returns to action Friday with a road trip to Lycoming College in Williamsport.
