KING'S WOMEN GO OVERTIME TO DEFEAT MISERICORDIA
WILKES-BARRE — The King's College women's basketball team picked up its first conference win of the season as the Lady Monarchs gutted out a 76-75 overtime victory over visiting Misericordia University Wednesday night in Scandlon Gym.
With the win, King's snapped a six-game losing streak while improving to 5-13 overall and 1-5 in Freedom Conference play. Misericordia slipped to 7-10 and 3-4 in league competition.
King's managed to build a 12-point first-half lead thanks to a late seven-point run over the final 2:13 of the opening stanza.
Katie Dugan buried a three-pointer before
Jessica McHugh and Kayla Fairheller scored back-to-back inside baskets to give the Lady Monarchs a 32-21 halftime advantage.
In the second half King's extended the lead to 15 points after a three-pointer from McHugh and a driving lay-up by
Marissa Manning to give the Lady Monarchs a 40-25 lead with 17:06 left in the contest. King's would maintain a double-digit lead for the next five minutes and held a 48-35 lead after a Manning basket with 12:55 on the clock.
But King's went cold and the Cougars responded with an 8-0 surge to trim the lead to 48-43 after a Katie Drayton jumper with 11:24 on the clock. King's would eventually push the lead back to 61-51 after a three-pointer from McHugh and an inside basket by
Jennifer Fabian with 6:18 left.
Misericordia battled back and cut the score to 67-66 with 0:16 to play but King's
Jennifer Fabian made a pair of free throws to give the Lady Monarchs a 69-66 advantage with 0:11 remaining. Misericordia, however, would send the game to overtime when Baro drained a long three-pointer from the left wing with no time remaining, knotting the score at 69-69 after regulation.
In the extra session King's jumped out to the lead thanks to three-points by Manning and buckets from Faeirheller and McHugh to build a 75-70 lead with 0:43 to go. The Cougars countered with a three-pointer by Shannon Croasdale to bring Misericordia to within 75-73 with 0:16 to play. But King's
Kasey Seitz was then fouled with 0:11 left and hit one-of-two attempts to push the score to 76-73. Needing a three-pointer to extend the game Baro missed a three-pointer and Croasdale rebounded and scored on a outback at the buzzer to set the final score.
Manning led King's with 18 points and 10 rebounds while Fabian also had a double-double with 14 points and 11 boards. McHugh tallied 13 points while Seitz and Feairheller added 10 points apiece. Seitz added five assists and six rebounds while Feairheller regitered seven rebounds and four assists.
Tara Zdancewicz added eight points and three boards while
Katie Dugan contributed three points and four rebouds.
The Cougars were led by Sam Baro with 26 points while Hannah Seely added 21 points and 11 rebounds while tallying her 1,000th career point.Justine Seeley netted nine points and hauled down 17 rebounds while Croasdale tallied seven points and 10 boards.
King's will return home Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. matchup against DeSales. King's will be hosting a Play Gray to raise funds for Lady Monarch head coach Brian Donoghue who is battling Brain Cancer. For more information go to the following link:
