MARYWOOD USES BIG FIRST HALF TO DOWN KING'S WOMEN
WILKES-BARRE — The visiting Marywood University women's basketball team torched the nets to build a 50-28 halftime lead and held off a second-half rally by King's College as the Pacers posted a 77-67 victory Monday night in Scandlon Gymnasium.
With the win, Marywood improved to 8-3 on the year while King's slipped to 4-8.
The started out closely as Marywood held a 18-17 lead with 13:19 remaining in the opening stanza. But Marywood outscored King's 32-11 the rest of the way to take a 50-28 advantage at the break.
In the second half the Pacers kept on the pressure and eventually buit its biggest lead of the game when a three-pointer by Morgann Haduck pushed the score to 59-32 with 15:05 left in the contest.
King's battled back and used a 17-2 run and cut the lead to 61-49 with 9:06 to play after four points from
Shae Grim and a bucket by
Marissa Manning. Marywood responded with a 9-4 spurt and pushed the score to 70-53 with 6:39 to go after a Brittany Mang jumper. The Lady Monarchs made another run, outscoring the Pacers 14-6 over the next three minutes to cut the lead to 76-67 with 3:08 on the clock. But neither team would score a basket the rest of the way as Marywood added a free throw from Danielle Terranella with 2:27 to play.
Marywood forged its halftime lead thanks to shooting 57.1 (20-35) percent from the field while making 4-of-8 from three-point range. The Pacers also forced King's into 12 first-half turnovers. The Lady Monarchs shot just 27.8 (10-36) from the field in the first half but played much better in the second stanza, outscoring the Pacers 39-27 over the final 20 minutes of play. By digging themselves into a deep hole at the half the Lady Monarchs were never able to recover.
King's was paced by
Marissa Manning with 19 points and 13 rebounds while
Jennifer Fabian followed with 15 points and 12 boards.
Kayla Feairheller added 11 points and eight rebounds while Grim tallied nine points and five rebounds.
Jessica McHugh netted eight points while
Kasey Seitz chipped in with two points, five assists, and four rebounds.
The Pacers placed five players in double-figure scoring. Brittany Mang had a team-high 15 points while Terranello followed with 14 points, six boards and four assists. Kimmy Green added 12 points while Nora Joyce and Haduck chipped in with 11 points apiece.
KIng's returns to action Wednesday with a 6:00 p.m. matchup at Susquehanna University.
