KING'S FOOTBALL DEFEATS WILKES 27-21 TO CAPTURE THE MAYOR'S CUP FOR SECOND STRAIGHT YEAR

EDWARDSVILLE, PA --- Patrick Robinson ran the ball 15 times for 137 yards and one touchdown and had two catches for 30 yards to the lead the King's College football team to a 27-21 victory over cross-town rival Wilkes University in the 19th annual Mayor's Cup game on Saturday afternoon at Schmidt Stadium in the Ralston Athletic Complex.

With the win, King's concluded the season with a 4-6 overall mark and 4-5 Middle Atlantic Conference record. Wilkes concluded its year with records of 2-8 and 2-7.

King's started the game on offense and drove 46 yards on 10 plays to the Wilkes 19 yard line before calling on Mikhail Kniaziewicz to kick a 36 yard field goal to give King's a 3-0 lead. The drive was kept alive when Tyler Hartranft hit Dan Kempa with a 19 yard pass on fourth and four from the Wilkes 34.

Michael Martina recovered a Ryan Dailey fumble on the second play of Wilkes' first offensive possession to give King's the ball back at their own 44 yard line. The King's offense was not able to capitalize on the turnover and short field and was forced to punt after four plays and 17 yards. The King's defense held Wilkes to a quick three and out to give the Monarchs the ball back with just under four minutes left in the first quarter.

The Monarchs started the drive at their own 48 yard line and drove the ball down to the Wilkes 23 yard line before turning the ball over on downs when Hartranft's completion to Tyler Marroni on fourth and eight fell a yard short of the first down marker.

The King's defense continued their excellent play in the first half and held Wilkes to a seven-play 21 yard drive to give King's the ball back at their own 23 yard line with 12:35 left in the first half.

It looked like the King's offense would have their first three and out of the game after an incomplete pass, an eight yard sack, and a 14 yard run by Patrick Robinson. On fourth and four on the King's 29 the Monarch lined up in punt formation when Robinson took a direct snap and ran the ball up the middle of the field 57 yards to the Wilkes 14 for a King's first down. Six plays later Kyle McGrath was able to score on a one yard run to extend the Monarch lead to 10-0.

Wilkes countered and drove the 43 yards on 12 plays down to the King's 29 yard line before turning the ball over when Zach Bundy broke up Dailey's pass to Jonathan Conklin on fourth and six. King's and Wilkes both had quick three and out on the next three possessions of the game.

Wilkes had their longest drive of the first half when they drove the ball 62 yards on five plays resulting in a three yard touchdown run by PJ Incremona to cut King's lead to 10-7 with 31 seconds left in the half.

After a short kickoff Hartranft found Robinson on a 20 yard pass to the Wilkes 36 yard line. On the next play Dan Kempa beat a Wilkes defender deep and Hartranft was able to lead Kempa into the end zone for a 36 yard touchdown pass to give King's a 17-7 halftime lead.

The King's defense continued their excellent play in the second half and held Wilkes to another three and out. The King's offense took 7:54 off the clock and drove the ball 63 yards in 13 plays down to the Wilkes three yard line before Kniaziewicz missed a 20 yard field goal attempt wide left.

Wilkes took the ball at their own 20 but could not get any momentum going and was forced into a fourth and seven from their 44. Wilkes attempted a fake punt of their own but the King's defense was ready for it and forced an incomplete pass to give the Monarchs the ball back with a short field to work with.

Patrick Robinson gave King's its largest lead of the game at 24-7 when he scored off a 15 yard run with 1:30 left in the third quarter. Robinson had four runs for 25 yards and one catch for 10 yards on the seven-play 44 yard scoring drive.
Wilkes responded on the third play of their next drive when Dailey hit Bousson for a 48 yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit to 24-14 with 53 seconds left in the third quarter.

King's would counter on the next drive with a 27 yard field good from Kniaziewicz to extend the lead to 27-14 with 11:11 left in the game. The Colonel defense looked like they had stopped King's twice on the scoring drive but King's was able to keep the drive alive a little longer to set up the field goal attempt. First on third and 12 from the Wilkes 38 Hartranft's pass to Kempa fell incomplete but Wilkes was called for pass interference to give King's a first down. Three plays later King's faced a fourth and 15 at the Wilkes 28 when Hartranft found Marroni on a 17 yard pass for another first down.

Wilkes drove the ball 27 yards on their next possession before King's forced four straight incompletions to take over the ball on down at their 39 yard line with 9:46 left in the game. King's took 3:13 off the clock on a five-play 11 yard drive that ended with an Eric Haenggi punt.

On the fourth play of Wilkes' next drive Tyler Mejasic intercepted a pass at the Wilkes 48 and returned it 11 yards. Two personal foul penalties gave King's the ball at the Wilkes 11. The Monarchs were unable to do anything with the short field and turned the ball over on downs when McGrath's fourth and three run fell just short of the first down.

Wilkes scored on their next possession when Dailey connected with William Deemer on a 14 yard touchdown pass to cut King's lead to 27-21 with 22 seconds remaining in the game. The scoring drive was Wilkes' longest of the game and lasted 16 plays and 98 yards in 2:51.

Wilkes attempted an onside kick but Marquis Miller was able to recover it for the Monarchs and give the Monarchs the victory. Patrick Robinson was named King's most valuable player after the game
