KING'S WOMEN WIN FREEDOM CONFERENCE OPENER WITH 89-72 WIN OVER DELAWARE VALLEYWILKES-BARRE — Entering its game with visiting Delaware Valley, the King's College women's basketball team was set to open the Freedom Conference schedule with an experienced Aggie squad picked third in the pre-season poll of conference coaches. King's, picked sixth in the same conference poll, played like the veteran squad and posted an impressive 89-72 win Wednesday night in Scandlon Gymnasium.
With the win King's improved to 3-3 on the year while Delaware Valley slipped to 2-4. The game was tight for much of the first half as the teams were locked in a 17-17 tie with 8:56 left in the opening stanza. ButShae grim made two foul shots and
Kasey Seitz buried a three-pointer to put the Lady Mpnarchs ahead 22-17 at the 7:58 mark. A pair of foul shots from
Tara Zdancewicz and a traditional three-point play by
Jennifer Fabian completed a 10-0 run as King's built a 27-17 lead with 5:38 on the clock.
After the Aggies cut the lead to 27-21 on a jumper by Agatha Drozd at 4:56, King's closed out the half with a 16-7 surge on the strength of three-pointers from Zdancewicz and
Kayla Feairheller, a jumper from
Marissa Manning, and a three=pointer by Seitz to build a 43-28 halftime lead.
In the second half King's would eventually build its biggest lead of the game at 23 points when back-to-back treys from Feairheller pushed the score to 59-36 with 14:29 to play. The Aggies cut the lead to 12 points on three occasions, the last coming at 76-64 with 3:10 remaining. But a
Shae Grim lay-up and a
Katie Dugan three-pointer brought the lead to 81-64 at the 2:23 mark and King's made six-of-eight foul shots down the stretch to set the final score.
Feairheller led King's with a double-double, totaling 20 points, 10 rebounds, and four assists. Manning followed with 16 points , nine rebounds, and three assists while Seitz added 15 points, five assists, and four rebounds. Zdancewicz contributed 13 points, three boards, and three assists while
Olivia Hoffman tallied 11 points, five rebounds, and five blocks. Grim chipped in with six points and four rebounds.
Delaware Valley was paced by Brenna Coll with 20 points and five rebounds while Eireann Anastasi followed with 19 points and five rebounds. Shannon Barlow chipped in with nine points and 10 boards.
King's shot 52.6 (30-57) percent from the floor as well as 47.4 (9-19) percent from three-point range. The Lady Monarchs also converted 71.4 (20-28) percent of its foul shots.
The Lady Monarchs will face their biggest test of the young season on Saturday when King's faces defending NCAA Division III national champion FDU-Florham at 1:00 p.m. in Madison, NJ. FDU is 6-0 and currently the top-ranked team in Division III.
