King's Football Drops 7-0 Defensive Battle to Stevenson

KING'S FOOTBALL FALLS TO STEVENSON 7-0

WILKES-BARRE -- Dylan Cumming scored from one yard out just before the halftime break for the only score of the game as visiting Stevenson University posted a 7-0 victiry over host King's College in the Middle Atlantic Conference opener for both teams on a rainy Saturday McCarthy Stadium.

With the win Stevenson improved to 2-0 while King's slipped to 0-2. 

With 2:07 left in the first half Stevens forced a King's punt and used a 19-yard return by Preston Addo to give the Mustangs at the King's 50. An 11-yard pass from Jeff Farrah to Cortez Lee gave Stevenson possession at the Monarch 39. Later in the drive Farrah found Cortez Taylor for 19 yards to the King's eight. Four plays later on a third-and-goal from the one, Cumming fought his way across the goal line for what proved to to be the lone score of the game. Tim Sternfield made good on the conversion kick as the Mustangs took a 7-0 lead with 0:09 remaining in the opening stanza.

King's had its chances in the game, including a missed opportunity on the Monarchs second possession of he game. King's marched 61 yards to the Mustang nine. But on a third-and-six play from the 11, Kyle McGrath fumbled at the one-yard line and the loose ball rolled out of the end zone for a Stevenson touchback, giving the Mustangs possession at their own 20.

On the opening possession of the third quarter King's advanced to the Stevenson 29 but could only muster one yard over the next three plays. On fourth-and-9,Tyler Hartranft was unable to find an open receiver down field and his pass to McGrath in the flat netted only two yards as Stevenson assumed possession.

On King's final possession of the game the Monarchs started at their own 20 following a punt and reached the King's 45 after a 13-yard pass to Dan Kempa and a 10-yarder to Antoie Basquiat with 2:45 left in the game. The Monarchs then attempted a long pass play but Hartranft was intercepted by Shane Clough at the Mustang 15 to end King's hopes of sending the game to overtime.

King's outgained Stevenson in the game 284-to-163 in total yards.

King's produced 98 rushing yards and 186 passing yards. The Monarch defense limited the Mustangs to 89 rushing yards on 49 carries and only 74 passing yards.

Hartranft completed 15-of-28 passes for 186 yards but threw two interceptions. Kempa caught seven passes for 119 yards while Patrick Robinson rushed for 47 yards on 12 carries and caught two passes for 11 yards. McGrath added 43 rushing yards on 12 attempts and caught three passes for 17 yards.

For Stevenson, Trey Lee rushed for 76 yards on 22 carries while Farrah completed 7-of-20 passes for 74 yards.

The King's defense was led by James Burke with 10 tackles while Nick Kaijala, Kris Matthews. and Bobby Russell had nine stops apiece. Michael Martina posted six tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss, including a half-sack while Peter Santorelli added five tackles and a half-sack. 


King's returns to action Saturday when the Monarchs travel to face Lycoming College at 1:30 p.m. in Williamsport.
