KING'S WOMEN DROP 60-54 DECISION AT DESALESCENTER VALLEY — The King's College women's basketball team was outscored 17-12 over the final 8:43 of the game as the Lady Monarchs dropped a 60-54 verdict to host DeSales University Saturday in Center Valley.
With the loss King's slipped to 8-11 overall and 4-4 in the Freedom Conference while DeSales improved to 11-8 and 5-3 in league play. The win also enabled the Bulldogs to sweep the season series from King's and hold a head-to-head tiebreaker should the teams finish the regular-season tied in the conference standings.
The teams played on virtually even terms throughout much of the first half as the Bulldogs held a 15-14 lead. With 8:50 on the clock DeSales used an inside bucket by Alex Suk to ignite a 6-0 spurt, giving the Bulldogs a 21-14 lead on another Suk bucket with 5:50 on the clock. King's chipped away and eventually tied the game at 26-26 when
Rachael DeTore hit a runner in the lane at the buzzer.
In the second half DeSales built leads of six twice on two occasions but the Lady Monarchs again battled back and took a 39-36 lead after a traditional three-point play from
Jennifer Fabian and a short jumper by
Olivia Hoffman with 13:45 left in the contest.
The Bulldogs eventually took the lead and maintained a four-point lead until a Fabian three-pointer at the 8:43 mark brought King's to within 43-42. The game remained close and with the Lady Monarchs trailing 46-44 with 6:27 on the clock DeSales put together a 8-1 spurt and built a 54-45 advantage after a jumper by Colleen Durkee with 2:35 left.
King's closed to 57-51 on a pair of free throws by Casey Seitz with 0:33 to play. But with KIng's forced to foul the Bulldogs made 3-of-4 charity tosses to up the lead to 60-51 with 0:19 left. King's added a late three-pointer by
Shae Grim to set the final score.
Fabian had 14 points as the King's player to reach double-figures. Seitz added nine points while DeTore added eight. King's top two scorers,
Kayla Feairheller and
Marissa Manning were held to a combined eight points in the game.
For DeSales, McCollian had 17 points and 19 rebounds while Megan Baird added 13 points. DeSales held a whopping 53-32 rebounding advantage while forcing 21 King's turnovers.
King's returns to the court Wednesday with a 6:00 p.m. Matchup against defending NCAA Division III national champion FDU Florham which is 19-0 and on a 51-game winning streak.
