Lady Monarchs Down Misericordia 71-66 to Sweep Season Series

KING'S WOMEN'S BASKETBALL POST 71-66 VICTORY OVER VISITING MISERICORDIA TO SWEEP SEASON SERIES

WILKES-BARRE, PA --- The King's College women's basketball team led the entire game en route to a 71-66 victory over local rival Misericordia University on Saturday afternoon at Scandlon Gymnasium.

With the win King's swept the season series over the Cougars for the third straight year, improving their overall record to 10-13 and 6-6 in league play heading into the final week of the regular season. Misericordia falls to 1-22 overall and 1-11 in conference play.

The Lady Monarchs jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead on a Marissa Manning layup, two free throws from Manning and a Kayla Feairheller layup. After a Misericordia bucket Jennifer Fabian and Manning scored to increase the lead to 10-2. A jumper by Feairheller with 14:24 left in the first half gave King's a 10-point lead at 14-4.

The Cougars then went on an 8-0 run behind a jumper from Nikki Baro, four points from Jaclyn Hajec and a layup from Shelby Brochetti. Manning scored the next seven points of the game to give King's a 21-12 lead with 6:53 left in the half. After trading buckets a layup from Olivia Hoffman, two free throws by Manning and a Kasey Seitz three-pointer gave the Monarchs a 31-18 lead with 2:17 left in the first half. A layup and free throw from Misericordia's Lauren Smicherko and four points from Feairheller gave King's a 34-21 halftime lead.

Feairheller opened up the scoring in the second half with a layup before the Cougars scored eight straight points to cut the Monarchs lead to 39-31 with 13:30 left. Once again the Monarchs responded to a Misericordia rally with a 12-4 run to increase their lead to 51-35 with 8:59 left. After two free throws from Seitz with 4:49 left King's held their largest lead of the game at 18 points.

The Cougars used a 21-4 run over the next 3 minutes and 40 seconds to come within two points of the Lady Monarch's lead. Brochetti had eight points on two three-pointers and two free throws and Smicherko had seven points during the run. Three free throws form Seitz built King's lead up to five points at 68-63 with 33 seconds left. Lena Williams then had a bucket and free throw to bring the Cougars back within two points with 24 seconds left but with the shot clock turned off the Cougars were forced to foul. Manning hit one of two free throws to give King's a 69-66 lead with 19 seconds left. Lena Williams was fouled on the next possession for the Cougars but missed both free throws. After a Cougar foul Seitz calmly hit her two free throws to give King's the 71-66 victory.

Marissa Manning led King's with 19 points, seven rebounds, and six assists. Kasey Seitz had 19 points with four rebounds and three assists while Kayla Feairheller had 16 points, four rebounds, and three assists. Jennifer Fabian had a game-high 10 rebounds to go with seven points while Olivia Hoffman had four points, seven rebounds, and three blocks.

The Cougars were led by Shelby Brochetti with 16 points and four rebounds. Lauren Smicherko had 14 points and four rebounds while Justine Seely had 11 points.

King's shot 43.1 (25-58) percent from the field and 73.9 (17-23) from the free throw line. Misericordia shot 40.0 (26-65) percent from the field and 57.1 (8-14) percent from the free throw line. The Monarchs held a 42-35 advantage in rebounding and had 24 points off 22 Misericordia turnovers.

The Lady Monarchs will next be in action for a critical Freedom Conference game against Delaware Valley College on Tuesday in Doylestown, PA at 6:00 p.m. The Monarchs currently sit in fifth place in the Freedom Conference standings, one game behind Delaware Valley and DeSales for third place with two games to play. Four teams qualify for the conference tournament which begins on February 25th. King's defeated Delaware Valley by 17 points, 89-72 at home back on December 3rd in the first conference game of the year.
