KING'S WOMEN RALLY FOR 60-57 WIN OVER WILKES IN SEASON FINALE

WILKES-BARRE — Jennifer Fabian had 16 of her team-high 22 points in the second half and the King's College women's basketball team overcame a horrific 13-0 deficit to start the game as the Lady Monarchs rallied for a 60-57 victory over cross-town rival Wilkes University Saturday in Scandlon Gymnasium.

With the win King's fished its season with a 11-14 record while going 7-7 in the Freedom Conference. The victory also enabled the Lady Monarchs to sweep the season series against its rival. Wilkes, meanwhile, ended its campaign at 10-14 and 4-10 in league play.

King's missed its first 20 shots from the field and fell behind 13-0 with 12:49 remaining in the opening stanza.  The Lady Monarchs dent score its first points until the 9:39 mark when Tara Zdancewicz made a pair of foul shots to cut the lead to 13-2. After a Wilkes turnover, Kayla Feairheller buried a three-pointer to cut he score to 13-5 with 9:08 on the clock.

KIng's would eventually get to within 19-16 after one-of-two foul shots from Marissa Manning. After the teams traded baskets the Lady Monarchs used a pair of free throws by Fabian to trim the lead to 20-20 with 1:23 to go. Wilkes responded with a pair of steals and lay-ups to bring the score to 27-20 but KIng's used a driving lay-up from Shae Grim with 0:04 left to bring King's to within 27-22 at the half.

In the second half Wilkes scored first to push the lead to 29-22 but King's used a 9-2 spurt to close to within 31-31 thanks to five points from Fabian and four Marissa Manning.  King's later took its first lead of the game at 40-38 after an inside bucket by Fabian, then added a Kayla Feairheller three-pointer to push the score to 43-38 with 12:16 left.

King's would eventually take its biggest lead of the game at 56-49 following a traditional three-point play by Manning with  4:10 remaining but Wilkes fought back to close to within 59-57 after s short jumper from Chelsea Smelas with 1:55 to play.

After the teams combined for three straight misses Jennifer Fabian made one-of-two free throws to extend the lead to 60-57 with 0:34 to go.   Wilkes then committed a turnover with 0:20 left and King's then issued two foul shots at 0:18 to keep the Lady Colonels in the game. But Wilkes was unable to capitalize as Kayla Brahm missed an off-balance three-pointer as time ran out and King's walked away with the victory.

Fabian led KIng's with 22 points, 13 rebounds, and four assists. Feairheller followed with 12 points while Seitz tallied nine points, five rebounds, and three assists. Manning contributed seven points and five boards in her final collegiate gam while Olivia Hoffman chipped in with four points, nine rebounds, and three blocks. Zdancewicz also snared nine rebounds in the game.
