King's Women's Laxers Post 18-10 Win Over Gwynedd

KING'S LADY LAXERS DOWN GWYNEDD 18-10

WILKES-BARRE -- Anastasia Araviakas had six goals and one assist while Sarah Almony added four goals to power the King's College women's lacrosse team to  18-10 victory over visiting Gwynedd-Mercy University Wednesday night at McCarthy Stadium.

With the win King's improved to 1-2 on the year while the Griffins slipped to 2-1.

King's built a 5-0 lead after 9:08 of play thanks to three goals from Almony and two by Araviakis. The teams traded goals over the final six goals of the half as Araviakis added two more and Almony one as the Lady Monarchs took an 8-3 led into the halftime break.

In the second half King's outscored Gwynedd 4-1 over the first five minutes of the final frame to build a 12-3 lead. After a Griffin goal, King's scored four straight goals, two coming from Araviakis and one each from Gabrielle Morrocu and Haley Greenwood to give the Lady Monarchs a 16-5 lead.  The Griffins eventually cut the lead to 16-10 but King's got goals from Kendra McCoy and Breanna Schurgot to set the final score at 18-8.

King's outshot Gwynedd 24-14 while also holding a 19-16 advantage in ground balls. McCoy,  Morrocu, and Greenwood scored twoce each for King's to help pace the Monarchs attack. King's goalie Victoria Zawacki made two saves in net. For Gwynedd,

Kelsey Yori had five goals and two assists while Brianna Greer added three goals.


King's will host Elmira College Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at McCarthy Stadium.
