KING'S WOMEN'S LAXERS DOWN ELMIRA, 11-8

WILKES-BARRE -- Gabriella Morrocu scored four goals and Anastasia Araviakis added three goals and two assists to power the King's College women's lacrosse team to a hard-fought 11-8 victory over visiting Elmira College Saturday at McCarthy Stadium.

With the win King's evened its mark at 2-2 while Elmira slipped to 0-2.

Elmira scored four of the first seven goals to hold a 4-3 lead  with 8:19 left in the first half. King's took its first lead of the game with a three-goal surge from Morrocu, Araviakis, and Sarah Almony to give the Lady Monarchs a 6-4 advantage with 3:41 on the clock. Elmira drew to within 6-5 at the break after a goal with 3:31 left.

In the second half King's pushed forward as goals from Araviakis and Morrocu extended the Lady Monarchs' advantage to 8-5 with 23:26 left in the contest. After Elmira countered with two goals to cut the lead to 8-7, King's responded with two goals of it own from Kendra McCoy and Araviakis to push the score to 10-7. After Elmira closed to within 10-8 on a goal at the 3:25 mark, King's put the game away with a Morrocu score with 0:41 left.

Joining Morrocu and Araviakis as scoring leaders was McCoy who tallied three goals. Victoria Zawacki made four saves in net for the Lady Monarchs.

Elmira was spaced by Kara Yakel with three goals while Moorea Spoljaric and Marissa Carr followed with two goals. Kylie Connell chipped in with one goal and three assists.

King's outshot Elmira 29-18 while holding a 16-7 advantage in ground balls.

The Lady Monarchs return to the field Wednesday with a 4:00 p.m. matchup at Lycoming.
