KING'S WOMEN'S LACROSSE DEFEAT EASTERN IN OVERTIME THRILLER, 12-11WILKES-BARRE, PA ---
Anastasia Araviakis scored twice in overtime including the game-winning goal with 1:48 left to give the King's College women's lacrosse team an exciting 12-11 overtime victory over Eastern University on Thursday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium.
With the win King's improves to 5-4 overall and 1-0 in the Freedom Conference. Eastern falls to 3-8 overall and 0-1 in the conference. The victory for the Monarchs comes a year after King's dropped a 6-5 triple-overtime heartbreaker to Eastern on the road.
Araviakis broke a 10-10 tie in the overtime period with a goal with 3:58 left. Eastern responded when Julie Haggan found the back of the net with just over two minutes remaining. Araviakis controlled the following draw and sprinted downfield and was able to draw a free position attempt with 1:49 left on the clock. She was able to convert on the free position shot for the game-winning goal. Eastern had one final shot at tying the game before the clock expired but the Eagles turned the ball right in front of the goal and
Alexus Arcaro picked up the groundball to secure the win.
The Eagles got on the board first but King's quickly responded with three goals to take a 3-1 lead with 25:13 left in the first half. After a Eastern goal
Breanna Schurgot and
Kendra McCoy each scored to increase the Monarchs lead to 5-2. After another Eagles goal McCoy scored her second goal of the game and Araviakis scored to give King's a 7-3 lead with 11:00 minutes left in the half.
Gabriella Morrocu and
Sarah Almony scored inbetween two Eastern goal to give the Monarchs a 9-5 halftime lead.
In the second half the Eagles were able to control possession and outscored the Monarchs 5-1 in the first nine and a half minutes to tie the score at 10. The Eagles outshot King's 17-3 in the second half. Morrocu scored King's lone goal of the half with 25:13 left. The Eagles had many quality looks over the last 10 minutes but were not able to sneak a shot past King's goalkeeper
Alexus Arcaro who made her first start since being injured before the Lady Monarchs second game of the season in Texas. Araco made two huge saves on free position shots over the last six minutes of regulation and had a game-saving save on a shot by Jacquelyn Janda with nine seconds left.
Anastasia Araviakis and
Gabriella Morrocu led King's with three goals and one assist each.
Sarah Almony scored three goals while
Kendra McCoy tallied two goals and
Breanna Schurgot had one.
Alexus Arcaro got the win in goal making 16 saves.
Eastern was led by Julie Haggan with four goals. Stephanie Hogan, Anna Charlebois, and Jenn McKelvie had two goals each while Jacquelyn Jada had one goal. Cortney Andes got the loss in goal making 4 saves.
King's will next be in action on Wednesday when they travel to face cross-town rival Wilkes-University at 4:00 p.m. at the Ralston Athletic Complex.
