KING'S WOMEN'S LACROSSE FALLS TO MISERICORDIA; CLINCHES FREEDOM TOURNAMENT BERTHWILKES-BARRE, PA --- The King's College women's lacrosse team fell to visiting Misericordia University 19-15 on Tuesday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium. However, with Manhattanville's loss to Wilkes, the Monarchs were able to clinch a berth in the Freedom Conference Tournament.
Misericordia improves to 8-6 overall and 5-0 in Freedom play while King's falls to 7-6 overall and 3-2 in the league. King's currently sits in third place in the Freedom Conference with one game left to play.
Misericordia scored first in the game before
Anastasia Araviakis evened the score with a goal with 26:01 left in the first half. The Cougars scored the next two goals to take a 3-1 lead before the teams traded goals until
Hayley Greenwood scored with 16:25 left to cut the Cougar lead to 6-5.
Nina Sjostrom tied to game at 6 with a goal almost a minute later.
Misericordia responded with the next five goals to take a 11-6 lead with 5:46 left in the first half. Araviakis ended the Misericordia streak with a goal to cut the deficit before the Cougars scored two more goals.
Gabriella Morrocu scored right before the half ended to cut the Cougar lead to 13-8 at halftime.
The Monarchs came out strong in the second half with four straight goals, one by
Kendra McCoy and three by Morrocu to cut the lead to 13-12. Misericordia scored twice but Araviakis scored her fourth goal of the game to keep King's within two at 15-13 with 20:05 left. The Cougars were able to increase their lead with three straight goals over the next 13 minutes to take a 18-13 lead with 7:15 left.
Breanna Schurgot and Araviakis scored back-to-back goals to being the Monarchs within three at 18-15 but The Cougars were able to hold possession the rest of the game and scored one more time with 20 seconds left to set the final score.
Gabriella Morrocu led King's with five goals and one assist while
Anastasia Araviakis scored five goals.
Kendra McCoy had two goals and one assist.
Hayley Greenwood,
Breanna Schurgot, and
Nina Sjostrom had a goal each for the Monarchs.
Victoria Zawacki made three saves in goal.
Misericordia was led by Olivia Garcia with five goals and three assists while Brooke North had five goals and two assists. Katie McLoughlin made seven saves in goal.
The Monarchs will play their final regular season game on Saturday when they travel to Purchase, N.Y. to face Manhattanville at 1:00 p.m.
