KING'S WOMEN'S LACROSSE OPENS SEASON WITH 11-9 WIN OVER CAZENOVIAWILKES-BARRE — The King's College women's lacrosse team built a 6-1 lead and held on for an 11-9 season-opening victory over Cazenovia College in a non-conference matchup Saturday at McCarthy Stadium.
Hayley Greenwood and
Sarah Almony gave King's a 2-0 lead 8:17 into the game. After a Cazenovia goal, King's
Gabriella Morrocu netted three goals while Almony added her second of the game to give the Lady Monarchs a 6-1 lead with 13:38 left in the opening half. After Cazenovia netted three straight goals to cut the lead to 6-4, King's rookie
Amanda Carroll netted her first collegiate goal to give King's a 7-4 lead at the half.
In the second half Morrocu scored just 0:24 into the frame to push the score to 8-4. After a Wildcat goal , Carroll scored again to give the Lady Monarchs a 9-5 lead with 25:51 remaining. But Cazenovia would not fold and three straight scores brought the Wildcats to within 9-8 with 13:10 to play.
But King's would not relinquish the lead and used another Carroll goal to extend the score to 10-8 with 8:04 on the clock. Cazenovia countered with a goal with 3:48 left but King's against responded when Morrocu struck net one more time to push the Lady Monarchs lead to 11-9 with 2:52 to go. King's managed to control the majority of ball possession the rest of the way to walk away with the win.
Morrocu led King's with five goals while Carroll added three scores. Almony contributed two goals and an assist while Greenwood finished with one goal.
Aleaha Blazick and
Megan O'Brien also dished out assists while O'Brien added a team-high seven ground balls for the Lady Monarchs. For Cazenovia, Patricia Breen, Daejah Werntz, and MacKenzie Bresett had two goals apiece while Kaithlin Shappard added one goal and five assists.
King's outshot Cazenovia 22-18 and held a slim 28-26 advantage in ground balls. Lady Monarch goalie

King's returns to the field Wednesday with a 4:00 pm. home matchup against Moravian College.
