LADY MONARCHS COME UP SHORT AT MANHATTANVILLE
PURCHASE, N.Y. --- The King's College women's basketball team rallied from being down 10 points with 6:23 left and had three opportunities to win the game but were unable to score as host Manhattanville College came away with a 57-56 victory on Saturday afternoon at Kennedy Gymnasium in Purchase, N.Y.
King's falls to 2-12 overall and 0-4 in conference play while the Valiants improve to 6-8 overall and even their conference mark at 2-2.
The game got off to a slow start as neither team was able to score until the Valiants scored on a layup with 8:35 left in the first quarter. Manhattanville then took a 4-0 lead with another layup with just under seven minutes remaining in the quarter. The Monarchs got on the board with buckets from
Rebecca Prociak and
Alexis Steeber to even the score. After the teams traded baskets the Valiants went on a 6-2 run to take a 14-10 lead.
Kayla Feairheller knocked down a three-pointer before the Valiants scored on a layup by Brittany Deieso to take a 16-13 lead heading into the second quarter.
King's started strong in the second quarter going on a 9-0 run in the first five minutes to take a 22-16 lead. After the Valiants knocked down a jumper
Kasey Seitz knocked down her second three-pointer of the quarter to give the Monarchs a seven-point lead with 4:30 left in the half. Manhattanville was able to cut the deficit down to four as King's outscored the Valiants 16-9 in the quarter to take a 29-25 into halftime.
The Monarchs came out of the locker room with the ball and quickly scored on a driving layup from
Kayla Feairheller. The Valiants responded with 8-1 run to retake the lead with 6:04 left in the quarter.
Shae Grim scored on a layup and Prociak knocked down one of two free throws for the Monarchs before the Valiants tied the game at 35 on a jumper with 4:13 remaining in the quarter. Manahattanville quickly scored the next five points on a three, a quick steal, and a fast break layup forcing King's to call a timeout.
Kayla Dillinger found Prociak under the basket for a layup out of the timeout to stop the Valiant run. The Valiants, however were able to build their lead up to six points before Feairheller knocked down two of three free throws to bring King's within four points at 45-41 heading into the fourth.
Manhattanville was able to build up their largest lead of the game in the first few minutes of the quarter after a three-pointer with 6:23 left gave them a 53-43 lead. The Lady Monarchs responded valiantly with a jumper by Feairheller, a jumper and layup from Hoffman and good defense to cut the lead down to 53-49 forcing Manhattanville to call a timeout with 4:31 remaining. After a bucket by the Valiants King's got another layup from Hoffman and then one of two made free throws from Prociak to make it a one-possession game with three minutes left.
Hoffman gave the Monarchs the lead with a jumper, a block and rebound on the defensive end, and then a layup with 1:23 left in the game. Hoffman then blocked a Kayleah McGuire shot with 19 seconds remaining but was called for a foul after McGuire grabbed the rebound and attempted to shot. McGuire knocked down both free throws to give the Valiants a one point lead with 16 seconds left. After a timeout to advance the ball the Monarchs got the ball into Hoffman's hands but her shot with 14 seconds left was off the mark and Manhattanville grabbed the rebound forcing the Monarchs to foul. The Monarchs however were not over the limit and were able to force a turnover before sending the Valiants to the line. King's once again got the ball into the hands of Hoffman, this time underneath the basket, as she was going up for the shot she was surrounded by three defenders and her shot was blocked with eight seconds left. The Valiants scooped up the rebound but turned the ball back over to the Monarchs for one more chance with six seconds on the clock. Unfortunately for the Monarchs Feairheller's shot from the top of the key with four seconds left hit the front rim and bounced back towards the court and the Valiants jumped on the loose ball as time expired.
Olivia Hoffman led the Monarchs with her fourth double-double of the year. She recorded 16 points, 10 rebounds, and had five blocked shots.
Rebecca Prociak also recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds including six on the offensive glass.
Kayla Feairheller scored 11 points,
Kasey Seitz had six,
Alexis Steeber had five,
Shae Grim scored four, and
Sara Wolbert had two points for King's. The Lady Monarchs shot 41.1 (23-56) percent from the field and 63.6 (7-11) percent from the free throw line.
The Valiants were led by Brittany Deieso with 16 points. Kayleah McGuire scored 13 while Nancy Caballero had 10.
King's will return home to host Misericordia University on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. in McGrane Gymnasium.
