Strong Second Half Leads Bulldogs over Lady Monarchs, 81-54

DESALES DEFEATS KING'S WOMEN'S BASKETBALL 81-54

WILKES-BARRE, PA --- DeSales University outscored the King's College women's basketball team 48-24 in the second half to defeat the Lady Monarchs 81-54 on Saturday in McGrane Gymnasium in Wilkes-Barre.

King's, who were playing their final home game of the year, falls to 4-18 overall and 2-10 in conference play. The Bulldogs improved to 18-5 overall and 10-2 in conference with the win.

Megan Baird knocked down a three-pointer five seconds into the game to give the Bulldogs the lead but the Monarchs drove the ball right down the court where Rebecca Prociak found Olivia Hoffman under the basket for two points. After a DeSales layup Kasey Seitz tied the game up with a three from the left side. After trading buckets the Bulldogs were able to build the largest lead of the quarter when Bridget Walsh scored on a fast break layup to give DeSales a 12-8 lead with 3:27 left. The Monarchs responded with a three-pointer from Erin Schmidt. After a Bulldog jumper Hoffman knocked down a jumper from the foul line and then Prociak tied the game up at 14 when she knocked down one of two free throw attempts. Hoffman was a presence defensively in the quarter for King's as she record five blocked shots.

In the second quarter DeSales was able to build an early five point lead. Back-to back layups from Prociak and Hoffman cut the score to 21-20 with 6:25 remaining in the half. The teams then traded baskets until Prociak scored on a driving layup and then knocked down a jumper to give the Lady Monarchs their first lead of the game at 26-25 with 3:42 left in the half. Two made free throws by Alexis Steeber increased the lead to 28-25. The Monarchs maintained their three point lead with one minute left in the half after Seitz found Schmidt on the left side for a jumper. Unfortunately for King's the Bulldogs went on a 6-0 run in the final minute to take a 33-30 lead into the locker room.

Seitz knocked down a three-pointer to begin the second half equaling the score at 33. However the Bulldogs retaliated with a three of their own to retake the lead. After a driving layup from Prociak DeSales knocked down a fast break three and then scored on a layup to take a six-point lead with 6:24 left in the quarter. The Monarchs were able to keep the margin at six points until the Bulldogs went on a 6-0 run over the course of 1:10 to take a 50-38 lead. Steeber knocked down a jumper to bring the deficit down to 10 points but DeSales scored the next seven points to take a 57-40 lead. Prociak knocked down a free throw to end the scoring in the quarter.

The Bulldogs began the fourth quarter right where they left off in the third with five straight points to increase their lead to 21 points at 62-41. DeSales was able to build their lead up to 28 points after a jumper with 3:47 remaining. The Monarchs went on a 7-2 run to cut the advantage down to 75-52 but that was as close as they would get.

Olivia Hoffman flirted with a triple-double scoring 10 points, grabbing seven rebounds, and blocking seven shots. Rebecca Prociak had 15 points and rebounds while Erin Schmidt scored 10 points. Alexis Steeber had seven points and four rebounds. The Monarchs shot 34.5 (20-58) percent from the field and 62.5 (10-16) percent from the free throw line.

Seniors Kasey Seitz, Shae Grim, and Kayla Feairheller were honored before playing their final home game of their King's careers. Seitz finished the game with seven points and a season-high seven rebounds. Grim scored two points and had three rebounds while Feairheller had two points and two assists.

DeSales shot 49.2 (31-63) percent from the field including 58.3 (7-12) percent from beyond-the-arc. Megan Baird and Leandra Sterner had 15 points each for the Bulldogs while Morgan Birmelin scored 11 and Bridget Walsh had 10.

The Lady Monarchs will return to the hardwood on Tuesday when they travel down the street to face Wilkes University at the Marts Center at 6:00 p.m.
