LADY MONARCHS CLOSE OUT REGULAR SEASON WITH LOSS AT MANHATTANVILLE
PURCHASE, N.Y. --- The King's College women's lacrosse team fell to host Manhattanville College 13-8 on Saturday afternoon at GoValiants.com Field in Purchase, N.Y. in a game that decided seeding for this week's Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom Tournament.
The Valiants improve to 11-5 overall and 5-2 in conference play to earn the third seed in the tournament. King's falls to 8-8 overall and 4-3 in conference to earn the fourth seed and set up a rematch of last year's semifinal game with top-seeded FDU-Florham on Wednesday.
Manhattanville struck first in the game to take an early lead just over two minutes in. However
Amanda Carroll scored twice in a span of 58 seconds to give King's a 2-1 lead. Carly Weiss tied the game up with an unassisted goal with 21:19 remaining in the half for the Valiants.
Katy Higinbothom found
Tabitha Truelson for a goal to give the Monarchs back the advantage but Manhattanville connected on a free position goal to even the score back up. Higinbothom recorded her second assist when
Kendra McCoy scored with 9:13 left to give King's a 4-3 lead but once again the Valiants responded with a goal of their own. After
Gabriella Morrocu scored on a free position shot Manhattanville scored twice to take a 6-5 lead with 3:27 remaining in the half. Truelson tied the game up with an unassisted goal before the Valiants ended the half with two more goals to take a 8-6 lead.
Truelson opened the second half with a goal on a free position shot to cut the lead down to one. However Manhattanville scored the next four goals to take a 12-7 lead with 6:22 remaining. Carroll ended the run with an unassisted goal with 5:48 left but the Monarchs were unable to get any closer.
King's was led by
Amanda Carroll and
Tabitha Truelson with three goals each.
Katy Higinbothom recorded two assists,
Gabriella Morrocu added a goal and an assist, and
Kendra McCoy scored once.
Victoria Zawacki made 11 saves in goal.
Sarah Dalsey led the Valiants with four goals while Jenna Nance had three goals and an assist. Jennifer Machin also had three goals and an assist coming off the bench for Manhattanville. Lauren Cassidy made six saves in goal to pick up the victory.
Manhattanville held a 27-21 advantage in shot and a 26-19 advantage in ground balls but the Monarchs were able to win 14 of the 23 draw controls.
The fourth-seeded Lady Monarchs will face top-seeded and two-time defending conference champion FDU-Florham in the semifinals of the MAC Freedom Tournament on Wednesday in Madison, N.J. A time has not been set yet but will be announced once it is determined. King's fell to FDU-Florham 14-4 in last year's semifinal meeting and 14-6 in the meeting between the two teams earlier this season at McCarthy Stadium. Third-seeded Manhattanville will face second-seeded Misericordia University in the other semifinal.
