King’s Women’s Lacrosse Begin Conference Play Dominating Wilkes

LADY LAXERS DOMINATE CROSS-TOWN RIVAL WILKES, 18-3

EDWARDSVILLE, PA --- The King's College women's lacrosse team scored the first eight goals of the game en route to a dominating 18-3 victory over cross-town rival Wilkes University on Wednesday afternoon at Schmidt Stadium in Edwardsville.

The Lady Monarchs even up their overall record at 5-5 and begin conference play on a high note with the win. The Colonels fall to 4-4 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

King's scored their first two goals when Megan O'Brien and Anastasia Araviakis were able to score on free position shots. Gabriella Morrocu made it 3-0 when she scored off an assist from Katy Higinbothom as King's was killing a penalty. O'Brien then found Amanda Carroll open for a goal and Higinbothom converted a free position attempt to make it 5-0 with 15:26 left in the first half.

Araviakis scored her second goal of the game when she picked up a ground ball off of a Colonel turnover and scored with 11:30 remaining. Morrocu quickly made it 7-0 on an unassisted goal just 16 seconds later. Carroll added another goal on a free position attempt to give King's an eight-goal advantage with nine minutes remaining in the half. The Colonels finally were able to get on the scoreboard with a goal with 8:17 left in the half. King's responded with a goal by Sarah Almony on an assist from Araviakis with 3:15 left. Wilkes was able to score their second goal just 16 seconds later. However the Monarchs got a goal from Morrocu on an assist by McCoy and a man-up goal from Higinbothom goal off an assist by Carroll to take an 11-2 halftime lead.

The second half was no different for the Lady Monarchs as Morrocu 52 second into the half. McCoy gave King's an 11-goal advantage off an assist from Almony before Alexis Amore scored a goal off an assist from Araviakis. Amore then scored her second goal of the game a few minutes later to give King's a 15-2 lead with just over 20 minutes left in the game. Morrocu scored her fifth goal of the game with 12:35 remaining off an assist by Araviakis. Carroll converted a free position shot and McCoy added another goal off an assist by Carroll to wrap up the scoring for King's. The Colonels were able to score on a free position attempt with a second left to set the final score.

Gabriella Morrocu led King's with five goals while Amanda Carroll had three goals and two assists and Anastasia Araviakis recorded two goals and three assists. Kendra McCoy and Katy Higinbothom had two goals and an assist each while Megan O'Brien and Sarah Almony recorded a goal and an assist a piece. Alexis Amore scored two goals. Victoria Zawacki was a brick wall in net making 10 saves to pick up the victory.

The Lady Monarchs defense held the Colonels, who entered the game ranked 11th in the nation in scoring, to their lowest total of the season. King's held a 34-19 advantage in shots, a 21-15 advantage in ground balls, and held a slim 11-10 edge in draw controls. The Lady Monarchs was the better team in transition for the second straight game as they were successful on 16 of their 20 clear attempts while Wilkes was only successful on seven of 16 attempts.

King's will be back in action on Saturday when they host two-time defending conference champion FDU-Florham at McCarthy Stadium at 1:00 p.m.
