King’s Women’s Lacrosse Opens Season with 24-7 Victory at Gwynedd Mercy

WOMEN'S LACROSSE SCORES SECOND-MOST OPENING DAY GOALS IN PROGRAM HISTORY

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA --- Seniors Kendra McCoy and Anastasia Araviakis scored five goals each to lead the King's College women's lacrosse team to a 24-7 victory over Gwynedd Mercy University in the season-opener for both teams in Gwynedd Valley.

Nine different players scored for the Monarchs who recorded the second-most first game goals in program history. The 24 goals and 34 points are each the fourth most in a single game in program history.

Amanda Carroll began the scoring 2:42 into the game with her 70th career goal. Anastasia Araviakis made it 2-0 1:10 later off the first career assist by freshman Mary Kate Klodarska. Gwynedd Mercy controlled the following draw and Lauren Mitros cut the Monarch lead in half at the 25:34 mark. The Monarchs responded on their next possession when Klodarska was able to draw a free position attempt. Unfortunately, her shot went wide right but Emma Lehman was there to score her first career goal. After Mitros scored her second goal of the game for the Griffins, Kendra McCoy scored her 40th goal of her career and Carroll scored her second goal of the game on Klodarska's second assist to give King's a 5-2 lead with 18:26 remaining in the half.

The Griffins cut the lead to 5-4 when Victoria Braeunle scored twice in a 30-second span with the second goal coming on a free-position shot. King's responded with McCoy's second goal of the game off of the first career assist by freshman Caitlin Butchko which started a streak of six straight goals by the Monarchs. Araviakis scored her second goal of game, followed by Carrol's third goal off an assist by Araviakis. King's then got two goals in a nine-second span when McCoy scored her third goal of the half with 1:23 left and then Butchko scored her first career goal. Lehman ended the run off an assist by McCoy with 31 seconds left and King's playing with an advantage after a Griffin card. Mitros scored her third goal with 11 second left to cut King's lead to 11-5 heading into halftime.

In the second half, McCoy and Carroll started another run of goals by the Monarchs when Caroll found McCoy for her fourth goal of the game just 36 seconds in. Klodarska scored her first career goal to give the Monarchs a 13-5 advantage with a man-up goal a couple minutes later. Lauren Nicotra then recorded her first career goal of a free position shot with 26:11 on the clock. Lehman made it 15-5 with her third goal of the game off an assist by Butchko 19 seconds later. Araviakis made it 16-5 with her third goal of game two minutes later. Gwynedd Mercy ended the run with a goal by Braeunle with 20:37 left.

Sarah Almony started a new run of goals by the Monarchs with the 55th goal of her career off an assist by Carroll. Araviakis made it 19-6 with back-to-back goals. McCoy gave the Monarchs a 14-goal lead with her fifth of the game with 12:44 remaining forcing a Griffin timeout. Butchko added her second goal of the game before the Griffins scored their final goal of the game with 6:13 left. The Monarchs scored three more times with two goals by Almony and the first career goal by Kaitlyn Campbell to set the final score.

Kendra McCoy led the Monarchs with a career-high seven points on a career-high five goals and two assists. Anastasia Araviakis added six points on five goals and one assist while Amanda Carroll had three goals and two assists. Caitlin Butchko had two goals and two assists off the bench in her career debut while Sarah Almony and Emma Lehman scored three goals each. Mary Kate Klodarska had a goal and two assists, Lauren Nicotra recorded a goal and an assist, and Kaitlyn Campbell scored a goal for King's. Orla Cottell made six saves to record the win in goal in her career debut.

The Griffins were led by Lauren Mitros with three goals and one assist. Victoria Braeunle scored three goals and Saige Brown added a goal. Alyssa Tomsic and Camryn Sheahan each had an assist. Nicole Wood made seven saves in goal.

King's outshot Gwynedd Mercy 39-15, had a 21-11 advantage in draw controls, and 14-8 in ground balls.

The Monarchs will be back in action on Saturday when they host SUNY Potsdam at 1:00 p.m. at McCarthy Stadium in the team's home opener.
