WOMEN'S LACROSSE DEFEATS EASTERN TO CLOSE OUT REGULAR SEASON
ST. DAVIDS, PA --- The King's College women's lacrosse team went on the road and defeated Eastern University 18-12 at Olson Field in the final regular season game of the year in St. Davids.
The Monarchs improve to 7-10 overall and 4-3 in the conference with the victory. The win also enabled the team to clinch a berth in next week's Middle Atlantic Conference Tournament as the third seed. Eastern, who entered the game already assured of a spot in the conference championships, falls to 6-8 overall and 4-3 in conference play. The Eagles will be the fourth seed.
The Monarchs entered the game knowing they would have to defeat the Eagles by at least four goals if they wanted to play in the conference tournament for the fourth consecutive year. They got off to a slow start as Eastern got on the board first but King's responded with a goal from
Anastasia Araviakis off a feed from
Amanda Carroll. The Eagles countered with a goal before
Sarah Almony scored off an assist by
Mary Kate Klodarska to even the game at 2.
Julie Haggan sandwiched two goals around a Liz Brennan goal to give the Eagles a 5-2 lead with 21 minutes left in the half forcing the Monarchs to call a timeout. The Monarchs came out of the timeout strong scoring the next seven goals to take a 9-5 lead.
Kendra McCoy started the run with an unassisted goal with 16:33 on the clock. Five different players scored led by McCoy and Carroll with two each. Klodarska, Araviakis, and
Emma Lehman scored for King's. The Eagles ended the run with a goal to cut King's lead to 9-6 at halftime.
Eastern scored first in the second half to make it a two-goal game but Carroll and
Kylie McCarthy scored back-to-back goals to bring the score to 11-7 with 24:12 left in the game. Haggan scored her third goal of the game for the Eagles before Almony and McCarthy increased the King's lead to five. The Eagles scored twice to cut the Monarch lead to 13-10 with 16:44 on the clock.
King's put the game away with a four-goal burst led by two from Araviakis to take a 17-10 lead with 5:30 remaining. Eastern scored twice before Klodarska gave the Monarchs one more goal before time expired to set the final score.
Amanda Carroll led King's with seven points on four goals and three assists while
Anastasia Araviakis had four goals and one assist.
Mary Kate Klodarska added two goals and two assists while
Kendra McCoy,
Kylie McCarthy and
Sarah Almony scored two goals each.
Emma Lehman and
Caitlin Butchko added a goal and an assist each.
Orla Cottell made nine saves to pick up the win in goal.
The Eagles were led by Julie Haggan with five goals and one assist. Liz Brennan added three goals while Meghan Kosmides and Mackenzie Dix had two goals each. Marcie Spencer made six saves in goal.
The Monarchs won 17 draw controls compared to Eastern's 14 and outshot the Eagles 28-25.
King's will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel back up to Dallas for a MAC Freedom Semifinal game against second-seeded Misericordia. The game time has not been determined yet. Eastern will face top-seeded FDU-Florham in the other semifinal.
