Monarch Women’s Lacrosse Game Notes – Eastern

WILKES-BARRE, PA (April 11, 2019) – The King's College women's lacrosse team looks to keep its strong play within the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) going Saturday, hosting Eastern University in action from McCarthy Stadium at 1 p.m. King's has won two of its last three, including a 15-11 road victory at Delaware Valley University on Wednesday.

Last Time Out: Freshman midfielder Jen O'Connor scored six goals and sophomore goalkeeper Orla Cottell posted 17 stops as the King's College women's lacrosse team knocked off Delaware Valley University 15-11 in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) play from Lipinksi Field.

The six goals for O'Connor were a career-high, while the freshman standout has recorded at least three or more points for the sixth game in her last seven. Cottell was equally as impressive for the Monarchs, as she came within two of her career-high in stops. The sophomore from Tinton Falls, NJ stopped a season-best 60.7 percent of the shots on cage, earning her fifth win of the year.

In addition to her scoring, O'Connor finished with four ground balls, two caused turnovers and five draw controls. The balance on offense was evident Wednesday, as Mary Kate Klodarska scored three time while adding three ground balls. It marked the third hat trick of the season for the sophomore, as she now sits with 21 goals on the year.

Emily Sims finished with two goals, a team-best five ground balls, two caused turnovers and three draw controls, while Emma Lehman posted two caused giveaways in addition to her two tallies. Sophomore Kylie McCarthy and senior Katy Higinbothom each posted an assist, while Bailey Jordan and Brianna Raucci both scored.

Defensively, Kelly Pierce finished with three ground balls, a caused turnover and three draw controls, and Mia Dardanelli posted a ground ball and a caused turnover. King's outshot their hosts 43-34, while clearing 17 of their 22 attempts.

A Look At The Monarchs (5-9, 2-1 MAC Freedom):
  • The King's offensive unit has come to life over the last three games, as the Monarchs have outshot their opponents in two of the last three.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Orla Cottell has played very well against Delaware Valley in her career, averaging 18 saves per game over her two contests against the Aggies.
  • Cottell is averaging 14 saves a contest over her last two games, and has raised her save percentage on the season to .407. Cottell's saves per game rate of 9.57 is fifth in the league.
  • Sophomore Emma Lehman has been on a tear of late, scoring two or more goals in each of her last five games. Lehman is second on the team with 24 goals, and her help in the clear game lately has been stellar.
  • Freshman Jen O'Connor comes into Saturday's game ninth in the MAC Freedom in points per game with 4.29 a contest, and her 60 points are second in the league.
  • O'Connor is seventh in the MAC Freedom in ground balls per game with 42, while her 29 caused turnovers rank second behind just the 31 by Katie Stordy of DeSales University. Her 94 draw controls lead the MAC Freedom, and is already the third-most ever in a season at King's.
  • Sophomore Mary Kate Klodarska scored three times on Wednesday, and is second on the squad in points with 36 with 21 goals and 15 assists. Klodarska's free position rate of four goals in 11 attempts leads the team.
  • Fellow sophomore Kylie McCarthy has posted 13 goals and 11 assists, adding 24 ground balls, and Emily Sims is fourth on the team with 20 goals along with 33 draw controls, second on the squad.
  • Kelly Pierce is second on the squad with 26 caused turnovers, adding 36 ground balls, also second on the team while scoring on both of her shots this season. She's also third on the team in draw controls with 23.
  • Junior Mia Dardanelli and Jennifer Smalley have combined for 13 caused turnovers as a part of the starting defensive unit.
A Look At The Eagles (3-7, 2-1 MAC Freedom):
  • Eastern has won two of its last three, knocking off Wilkes University 16-8 on Wednesday in St. Davids, PA.
  • The Eagles come into the game on Saturday with the MAC Freedom's third-best shooting percentage, scoring on 42.7 percent of their shots.
  • Eastern though has only taken 16.70 shots on goal per game, which ranks last in the conference.
  • The Eagles are averaging 21.80 turnovers per contest, which is third-most in the league.
  • Megan Kosmides is the go-to player for the Eagles, as she leads the team with 39 goals while ranking first in the MAC Freedom in draw controls per game with 8.80 a contest. She also is sixth in caused turnovers a contest with 2.10.
  • Sabrina Campbell has 27 goals as well for Eastern, leading the team with six assists.
  • Defender Stephanie Arnold leads the team with 24 caused turnovers, adding 26 ground balls as well.
  • Eastern goalkeeper Marcie Spencer has made 80 saves this season, allowing 170 goals while making saves on 32.0 percent of shots on goal.
  • Head coach Kim Campbell is in her fifth year in charge of the Eagles, after playing for Eastern during her collegiate career.
Against Eastern All-Time: The series with Eastern over the last 11 seasons has been even, as the Eagles hold a 6-5 all-time edge with the Monarchs. King's has won the last four meetings, including an 18-12 win in St. Davids last season.
