Monarch Women's Lacrosse Game Notes - DeSales

WILKES-BARRE, PA (April 16, 2019) – The King's College women's lacrosse team will be trying to continue their recent success in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom play as they head to Center Valley, PA to take on the Bulldogs of DeSales University. King's has won three of their last four contests, including an 18-5 victory at home against Eastern.

Last Time Out: Freshman midfielder Jen O'Connor scored another six goals and sophomore goalkeeper Orla Cottell only allowed five goals as the King's College women's lacrosse team defeated Eastern University 18-5 in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) play from McCarthy Stadium.
 
After posting a career-high six goals against Delaware Valley University, O'Connor did it again against Eastern, and has scored at least three points in seven of her last eight games. The rest of the Monarch offense went to work as well, putting 33 shots on goal. Cottell was incredible from the cage, only allowing five of 18 shots on goal from Eastern. The sophomore stopped a season best 72.2 percent of shots on cage the game after posting a season-best 60.7 percent against Delaware Valley.
 
As well as scoring six goals, O'Connor added an assist, put all nine of her shots on goal, and finished with four ground balls, three caused turnovers and five draw controls. The offense showed more balance as sophomore Emma Lehman scored four goals as well as scooping up two ground balls. Lehman now has 28 goals on the season.
 
Kylie McCarthy finished with four points on two goals and two assists and had five ground balls and two caused turnovers. Mary Kate Klodarska added two goals and an assist of her own, scooped up one ground ball and caused a turnover. Emily Sims added a goal and two assists, scooped up three ground balls, caused a turnover and had three draw controls.
 
Junior defender Kelly Pierce put in a great defensive effort, leading the team in ground balls with six and caused turnovers with five. Jennifer Smalley also had a ground ball and two caused turnovers. King's outshot their visitors 37-23 and cleared 17 of 20 attempts.
 
A Look At The Monarchs (6-9, 3-1 MAC Freedom):
  • The King's offense has continued to show life over the past four games, having outshot their opponents in three of them.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Orla Cottell has been continuing her excellent play in the cage and has improved her save percentage to .424 after her dominant performance against Eastern.
  • Sophomore Emma Lehman has continued her hot streak, have scored at least two goals in her last six games. She is second on the team with 28 goals.
  • Freshman Jen O'Connor now sits at seventh in the MAC Freedom for points per game, with 4.47 per contest and her 67 points is third in the league.
  • O'Connor is now at second in the MAC Freedom in ground balls, picking up 46, and her 3.07 ground balls per game mark put her at eighth. She is also seventh in caused turnovers per game with a 2.13 mark. Her total of 32 caused turnovers still sits at second just behind Katie Stordy of DeSales who has 34 and just ahead of fellow Monarch Kelly Pierce who has 31 this season.
  • Mary Kate Klodarska scored twice on Saturday and is second in the team with 39 points on 23 goals and 16 assists.
  • Fellow sophomore Emma Lehman leaped to third in points for the team at 30 off 28 goals and two assists. Emily Sims is right behind Lehman with her 29 points, and has scooped up 32 ground balls and caused 13 turnovers.
  • Kelly Pierce is second in ground balls with 42 and second in caused turnovers with 31.
 
A Look At The Bulldogs (7-6, 2-2 MAC Freedom):
  • While the Bulldogs have won two of their last three, they most recently fell to FDU-Florham on Saturday 19-4 in Madison, NJ.
  • DeSales enters this game second in the league in shot percentage with 46.1, only one tenth of a percent behind leading Misericordia at 46.2.
  • DeSales ranks second in goals per game with 13.46 and fourth in shots per game with 29.23
  • The Bulldogs have distributed their contributions on offense as their top four point leaders all have above 45 points, and three have at least 50.
  • Their current offensive leader is Katie Stordy on 52 points with 33 goals and 19 assists.
  • Stordy is also second in the league in ground balls per game with 4.92 and caused turnovers per game at 2.62.
  • Julia Astram is ranked fifth in goals per game at 3.73, and fellow Bulldog Azlin Myers is ranked seventh, with a 3.08 mark.
  • Myers is also fourth in the conference in shots per game.
  • Rachel Sheubrooks is the main netminder for the Bulldogs and posts a save percentage of .422, and has allowed 13.41 goals per game.
 
Against DeSales All-Time: King's and DeSales have only met twice before this matchup, dating back to the 2017 season. King's holds the 2-0 advantage, having won at DeSales in 2017 15-5, and then against at home in 2018 8-5. (Full History)
