Monarch Women’s Lacrosse Game Notes – Misericordia

WILKES-BARRE, PA (April 23, 2019) – The King's College women's lacrosse team looks to rebound from last Wednesday's narrow loss at DeSales University, taking on Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) leader Misericordia University Wednesday evening in McCarthy Stadium. King's can clinch a conference tournament appearance with one victory this week over either Misericordia or Manhattanville College on Saturday.

Last Time Out: The King's College women's lacrosse team traveled to DeSales University for a Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) contest, suffering a heartbreaking 14-13 loss Wednesday afternoon in action from the DeSales Turf Field.

Sophomore keeper Orla Cottell was strong in the second half for the Monarchs, as she finished with 12 saves including eight in the second half. Lehman finished with four goals, the second-straight game with four goals while her streak of scoring two or more goals was extended to seven games. Emma Lehman also scored on each of her two free position shots on the night.

Freshman Jen O'Connor tallied three goals and added an assist, as she tied for the team lead with seven shots, while adding two caused turnovers and five draw controls. Higinbothom tallied two goals and an assist for King's, while Klodarska upped her goal total to 25 with two more Wednesday. Klodarska has posted two goals in each of her last five games.

Defensively, Pierce had another strong game for the Monarchs, posting four ground balls, two caused turnovers and two draw controls. Junior defender Mia Dardanelli finished with three ground balls, and Sims finished with two ground balls, two draw controls and a goal.

A Look At The Monarchs (6-10, 3-2 MAC Freedom):
  • The Monarchs have had a strong stretch of late, winning two of their last three contests including victories over Delaware Valley University and Eastern University.
  • Freshman Jen O'Connor leads the Monarchs with 71 points, which is a program record for a newcomer. The previous record was 69 by Anastasia Araviakis back in 2015.
  • O'Connor leads the MAC Freedom in draw controls with 104, and her total ranks second all-time in a season behind just the 155 by Emily Foley in 2013.
  • Sophomore Orla Cottell currently has 159 saves this season, which ranks fourth all-time for saves in a single season and just 19 saves short of the all-time single-season mark of 178, held by Heather Kelly in 2008.
  • Head coach Ashley Stevens is the only King's women's lacrosse coach in program history to have a MAC Freedom record above .500 for her tenure, as she currently has a 11-8 conference mark in her three seasons.
  • Sophomore Mary Kate Klodarska is second on the team with 41 points, which is 19 points more than she had last season as a freshman.
  • Emma Lehman has posted 32 goals on the season, which is 14 goals more than last season while adding a career-high 14 ground balls.
  • Junior Kelly Pierce has scored on all three of her shots this season, and is second on the team in caused turnovers with 33. She's five caused turnovers shy of her career high of 38, set last season.
  • 10 players have started all 16 games this season for the Monarchs.
A Look At The Cougars (10-5, 5-0 MAC Freedom):
  • The Cougars of Misericordia comes to town Wednesday on a seven-game win streak, defeating Wilkes 20-6 last Wednesday evening.
  • Misericordia leads the MAC Freedom in shooting percentage with a 45.6 percent clip, while is 211 draw controls are also tops in the league.
  • The Cougars are scoring the most goals of any team in the league this season with over 15, while allowing just 9.27 a contest.
  • Kaila Quinlivan leads the Cougars in points with 79, while her 5.27 points per game ranks second in the conference. She is also seventh in goals per game with 3.20, and her 2.07 assists a game is second-best in the MAC Freedom.
  • Amy Roth has 29 goals and 20 assists, while Justine Johnson adds 27 goals and 14 assists to the Cougar attack. Katie Reilly also has dished out 12 assists in addition to her 15 scores.
  • Kristen Ritter and Lexee Willey each have 23 goals this year for the Cougars.
  • Brianna Ladner is the team's leading defender with team-highs of 20 caused turnovers, while posting a Misericordia high 65 draw controls.
  • Misericordia has a small stable of goalkeepers, as four have played this season. The Cougars have started Maggie McGovern in all 15 games, as she is posting a goals against average of 9.24 on 99 saves, and Erika DeSantis has also played in 128 minutes of action.
Against Misericordia All-Time: The Monarchs are 7-10 against Misericordia over the last 17 games, but have dropped the last seven in the series. King's is 4-3 at home against the Cougars. Last season, these two teams met twice, with Misericordia earning a 21-5 win in the MAC Freedom playoffs.
