Last Time Out: Visiting FDU-Florham outscored the King's College women's lacrosse team 11-0 in the second half, extending an 8-7 first-half lead as the Devils earned a 19-7 Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) win over the Monarchs in play from McCarthy Stadium Saturday.
Things started out great for the Monarchs (4-9, 1-1 MAC Freedom), as sophomore
Mary Kate Klodarska set up freshman
Jen O'Connor 35 seconds into the game for the contest's first tally. Klodarska would tally 31 seconds after that, with help from freshman
Bailey Jordan, to make the score 2-0 in favor of the hosts.
FDU-Florham battled back with three goals, but the Monarchs stopped the run with 18:36 to go in the first half on a nice goal from
Emma Lehman, her 21st of the season at that point. The Devils notched back-to-back goals from Kathleen Petrucelli and Hannah Bhend to make it 5-3 with 12:25 left in the first. On the fifth goal, Caroline Pape tallied her 100th point at FDU-Florham, setting up Bhend for the score.
The run would continue as Pape tallied on a free position goal with 11:56 to go to take the game's largest lead up until that point at 6-3. The host Monarchs wouldn't go away though, as senior
Katy Higinbothom scored her first goal of the season unassisted, followed by another Lehman goal to make it 6-5.
With 4:31 remaining in the first half, Klodarska was set up by O'Connor for her 18th of the year, and O'Connor followed with a goal with 53 seconds to go in the half to tie the game at seven. The O'Connor goal came following a nice save from
Orla Cottell on a free position shot. FDU won the ensuing draw control, and netted a tally just before the half to make it 8-7 going into the break.
After halftime, the Devils would turn up the intensity on both ends of the field, scoring 11 unanswered tallies to pull away for the win. Cottell finished with 11 saves in the loss, the sixth time this season that the Monarch netminder has stopped 10 or more shots in cage.
O'Connor and Klodarska each paced King's with three points apiece on a pair of goals and an assist, while O'Connor tallied two ground balls, three caused turnovers and five draw controls as well. Lehman had four shots on cage in addition to her two goals, and
Emily Sims added two assists, seven draw controls and three ground balls.
Defender
Kelly Pierce finished with four caused turnovers, three draw controls and three ground balls, as the junior captain has posted three or more caused turnovers in four straight games. Pierce also has 10 ground balls in the last two games combined.
Kylie McCarthy added three caused turnovers, and Higinbotham also tallied two caused turnovers and a ground ball.
