WILKES-BARRE, PA (September 28, 2019) -- Junior
Emily Fernandez was tabbed as the opening seed in the 2019 Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Individual Championships top bracket, and moved into Sunday's semifinals after a busy day of play from Kirby Park Saturday.
Fernandez, who is looking to defend her 2018 title earned last year at the No. 1 position, earned a bye in the opening round but had no problems punching her ticket to the semifinal round with a 6-2, 6-0 win over NIcole DelRosso of FDU-Florham. Fernandez will play Jenna Skove of Stevenson, while Francesca Varela-Seri and Agatha Malinowski of Stevens still remain on the other side of the bracket.
At No. 2 singles,
Diana Rodriguez was eliminated in the opening round by Aubrey Chambers of Lycoming College in heartbreaking fashion. Chambers earned a 6-4 win in the opening set, but Rodriguez rallied to send the match to a super tie-breaker with a 6-3 win in the second. In the breaker, Chambers pulled away for a 10-6 win to move into the quarterfinals.
The No. 3 singles bracket saw
Alexis Zalutko fall to Cassandra Boldt 6-2, 6-0, while MIkayla Reynolds fell to Chloe Dennerlein of Delaware Valley 6-0, 6-0. Sophomore
Lauren Lamarca battled hard at No. 4 singles, but fell to Bailey Greco of DeSales University 6-4, 6-1.
At No. 6,
Addy Atkins earned a nice 6-0, 6-1 win in the first round over Tatum Marino of Arcadia. In the quarterfinals, Atkins would fall 6-2, 6-1 to Nicole Badalyan of Stevens Institute of Technology.
At No. 7,
Codi Young earned a bye into the quarterfinals but was defeated by Sarah Malone 6-1, 6-1. In doubles action, Fernandez and Zalutko picked up a 8-6 win in the first round but would fall to a team from Hood College 8-3.
The No. 2 doubles team of Rodriguez and Reynolds picked up an 8-4 win over a pair from Misericordia, but would fall in the quarterfinals 8-4 to DeSales. King's would fall at No. 3 and No. 4 doubles to end their tournaments Saturday.
Play will resume at 9 a.m. Sunday with the semifinal rounds of doubles followed by singles at Kirby Park in Wilkes-Barre.
