Broga, Zambetti Break Program Records to Qualify for Finals at MAC Championships

CHESTER, PA (May 7, 2021) -- Angelina Broga qualified for two finals while breaking the King's College women's outdoor track and field record in the 200 meters and Nicole Zambetti broke the 800 meters record to qualify for Saturday's final on day two of the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships from Widener University in Chester.

Messiah University leads the team race with 54 points followed by Misericordia University in second with 38 points. York College of Pennsylvania is third with 37 points, Alvernia University has 35 points, and Widener rounds out the top five teams with 31 points. Sixth through eighth are separated by two points with Lebanon Valley College having 30, Eastern University 29, and DeSales University with 28. Stevens Institute of Technology is ninth with 19.5 points, Albright College is 10th with five points, the Monarchs have three points, and Arcadia University has 2.5 points.
 
On the Track
100 Meter Dash
Angelina Broga qualified for Saturday's final in the second of three heats with a time of 13.25 seconds. She finished second in the heat and had the sixth-fastest qualifying time in the field of 24. Her time was her third-fastest this year and not far off from her career best of 13.22 seconds. Her heat was won by Messiah's Ellissa Slader who ran the second-fastest time at a career best 12.68 seconds. Laura Mathews from Stevens also ran a career best time to win the first heat with the fastest time of the day at 12.62 seconds. The third heat was won by Messiah's Kathryn Wiederrecht who ran the third-fastest time of 12.71 seconds. Olivia Craig from DeSales finished second in the first heat with the fourth-best time at 13.10 seconds while Misericordia's Sonialys Badillo was third in the heat and fifth overall with a time of 13.16 seconds. The final qualifying time for the final on Saturday was 13.30 seconds.
  
200 Meter Dash
Angelina Broga qualified for her second final on Saturday running a program record time of 26.68 seconds to finish second in the second of three heats. Her time was the sixth-best in the field and was faster than her previous record of 26.85 seconds she ran last Saturday at the Monarch Open. Kathryn Wiederrecht from Messiah won the heat with a time of 26.04 seconds. Her time was the third-fastest in the field of 21. Stevens senior Gina Dello Russo ran the fastest time winning the third heat in 25.02 seconds. Ellissa Slader from Messiah won the first heat in a career best 25.77 seconds. Alvernia's Micah Yarbray was second in the first heat with the fourth best and career best time of 26.34 seconds. Widener junior Angelica Howeel was fifth overall and second in the third heat with a season best time of 26.48 seconds. The qualifying cutoff time was 27.28 seconds.
  
800 Meter Run
Nicole Zambetii ran a program record time of 2:20.71 to qualify for Saturday's final. The first-year runner finished second in the first of three heats earning an automatic spot in the final and had the fourth-best time in the field while lowing her previous record time of 2:21.78. Zambetti went out in 1:06.30 and had the lead at the bell. She ran 1:14.42 over the final 400 meters and held the lead all the way until the final straightaway where Widener's Maia Semmes surged ahead to win the heat in 2:20.25. Semmes had sat behind Zambetti running 1:06.54 over the first lap before closing in 1:13.72. Beth Albright finished third in the third heat and just missed qualifying for the final as she finished ninth overall out of 20 runners with an excellent time of 2:24.13. Her time was her second-best time of the year and sixth in program history. Albright's heat was won by Messiah's Esther Seeland who entered the day with the best 800 time in the country this year. She took it easy in the preliminary making sure she won in 2:22.75. Eastern's Mary Bernotas finished second and had the seventh-fastest time in the field at 2:23.25. The last qualifying time for the final was 2:23.29. Alvernia's Katelyn Schoener ran 2:19.82 seconds to win the second heat and have the fastest time of the day. Semmes had the second-fastest time while Misericordia's Averi Rine finished second behind Schoener with the third-best time at a career best 2:20.28. Messiah's Ashlyn Stonge had the fifth-best time to finish second in the third heat with a career best 2:21.71.
  
100 Meter Hurdles
Kristine Krumpfer ran 17.71 seconds to finish sixth in the first of two heats and 12th overall. That time was her third fastest this year. Her heat was won by Julia Pena from York who ran the fastest time of the day at a career best 14.987 seconds. Laura Mathews of Stevens won the first heat in 14.989 seconds. Alvernia's Amanda Tony was third overall and second in the first heat with a season best time of 15.30 seconds. Kathryn Wiederrecht from Messiah was second in the first heat and had the fourth-best time at 15.92 seconds. Laura Billings of DeSales was fifth overall and third in the first heat with a career best time of 16.12 seconds. The last qualifying time for Saturday's final was 17.12 seconds.
  
3000 Meter Steeplechase
In the only track event of the day that ran a final, Kelsie Canessa finished on the podium for the first time in her career with an eighth-place finish scoring one point. The senior had a time of 13:00.57 in her final MAC Championship race which was her fifth-best time in the event over her Monarch career. She opened the race with a time of 50.29 seconds over the first 200 meters. Canessa then ran lap times of 1:35.25, 1:37.25, and 1:39.97 on her first three full laps with the barriers. She then ran lap times of 1:44.96, 1:47.23, and 1:54.62 before closing in 1:51.02 on the final lap.

Eastern junior Mary Bernotas took control of the race from the very beginning and won easily in 11:15.49. The 2019 runner-up in the event went out in 43.89 seconds over the first 200 meters and ran lap times between 1:28 and 1:32 over the course of the rest of the race. Ali Schutte from Messiah was second with a career best time of 12:11.24 while Misericordia's Casey Franzreb was third in a career best 12:27.77. York's Danielle Andrews finished two seconds behind Franzreb in fourth with a career best time of 12:29.58 and Katelyn Prothero from Messiah also had a career best time of 12:35.64 to finish fifth.
 
Field Events
High Jump
Sarah Zultevicz jumped 1.46 meters (4'9.50") to finish ninth in the field of 10. The senior finished with the same height as five other jumpers, but the other jumpers finished ahead of her due to tiebreakers. Zultevicz entered the competition at 1.41 meters and needed all three attempts to clear that height. She also needed all three jumps to clear 1.46 meters. She then missed all three tries at 1.51 meters. Her finish is her best career finish at a MAC Championships, indoor or outdoor, in the event while her height is her second-best at a Championships meet.

Messiah's Taylor Wiederrecht won her second consecutive title with a height of 1.62 meters (5'3.75"). Her first jump came at 1.46 meters which she needed two tries to clear. After she cleared 1.51 meters and 1.56 meters on her first attempts, she needed two jumps to clear 1.59 meters and 1.62 meters. Alvernia's Susanna Pirollo was second with a career best height of 1.56 meters (5'1.25"). She cleared every jump on her first attempt until she got to 1.56 meters where she needed all three jumps. Misericordia's Hayley Engle was third with a height of 1.51 meters (4'11.50"). Jaelynn Walker from Albright finished fourth at 1.46 meters (4'9.50") while Eastern's Shani Hodges was fifth with a career best jump of 1.46 meters (4'9.50").
 
Long Jump
Sarah Zultevicz did not record a mark fouling on all three of her jumps. Eastern's Taylor Bynum-Bain won with a career best jump of 5.35 meters (17'6.75") on her fourth attempt. Alvernia's Shinelle Felix was second with a mark of 5.33 meters (17'6") on her second attempt. Julia Pena from York was third with a mark of 5.20 meters (17'0.75") on her first jump. Liana Meyer from Stevens was fourth with a career best jump of 5.15 meters (16'10.75") on her second try while Megan Brubaker from DeSales was fifth with a career best mark of 5.11 meters (16'9.25") on her fourth attempt.

The Championships will conclude on Saturday with the first event the Monarchs are competing in scheduled for 12:30 pm.
