WILKES-BARRE, PA (September 15, 2022) -- With their first game of the 2022 season under their belt, the King's College football team is itching to get on the turf at McCarthy Stadium to compete in front of their home crowd this Saturday afternoon for Homecoming 2022, their home opener, and their first MAC contest of the season against #15 Delaware Valley University. The Monarchs are coming off a nice 17-10 win over Hartwick College in Oneonta, N.Y. last week as they used 17 unanswered second-half points to earn the win in the season opener. The Aggies last defeated Montclair State 14-6 in a balanced offensive effort on the road.

The Coaches: Jeff Knarr is in his 13th season (12th with a season) with the Monarchs, as he is only the second coach of King's College football since 1991. Knarr took over for Rich Mannello, who was the head coach since football was reinstated at King's in 1993. Today is the 111th game that Knarr has been the head coach of the Monarchs. Duke Greco enters his ninth season at the head of his alma mater, recording a 72-12 overall record with the Aggies. Greco has led the Delaware Valley football program to a postseason berth each season, five NCAA appearances, two trips to the NCAA quarterfinals, four consecutive MAC Championships, and two Centennial-MAC Bowl Series Championships, while picking up two MAC Coach of the Year honors.

Looking at #15 Delaware Valley: The Aggies enter today's contest 2-0 after a strong 14-6 win over Montclair State University on the road last Saturday. A pair of touchdowns in the first and fourth quarters held off a late six-point fourth quarter from Montclair as the Aggies remained unbeaten in 2022. Louie Barrios IV went 15-for-37 with 126 passing yards, a touchdown, and an interception in the win. The run game was led by Jay White with 55 total yards on 17 carries, while Tahmir Barksdale averaged 6.0 yards per carry on his three rushes and led the recievers with 44 yards on six receptions. Delaware Valley's defense was paced by Ahmad Jones who totaled eight tackles, including seven solo, 2.0 for a loss of 11 yards, a sack for a loss of seven yards, and two forced fumbles. On special teams, Pat Moran punted for 311 yards at 38.9 yards per punt. As a team, the Aggies defense leads the MAC as it holds its opponents to 7.0 points on 174.5 yards per game. Additionally, the Aggies are on a 36-game win streak against MAC opponents.

Red and Gold: In their home opener, King's will be wearing their red jerseys and gold pants with their traditional gold helmets on Saturday afternoon against Delaware Valley.

Single Digit Tough: The Monarchs award single digits based on merit, leadership and are retained throughout their time at King's. King's returned two single digit members from the 2021 season and added two more this past spring. The Monarchs now have four Single Digit Tough players: Mike Karycinski (0), Joseph Carchio (1), Brendan Mozeleski (3), and Brandon Cohen (9).

Captains This Weekend: The Monarchs will send four players out for the pre-game coin flip. Representing the offense will be graduate student Tyler Moore and senior Brandon Cohen, while the defensive unit will be represented by seniors Joseph Carchio and Dallas Solomon.

A Look at the Monarchs:
  • King's returns a core of leaders and role players on both sides of the football in 2022. For the offense, the Monarchs return All-MAC Second Team honoree in Brandon Cohen as he ranked as one of the top tight ends in the MAC, posting 28 catches for 213 yards and two touchdowns for an average of 21.30 yards per game. The defensive unit returns All-MAC First Team selection in Brendan Mozeleski as he ranked fifth in the conference with 83 total tackles for an average of 8.3 per contest. His 1.20 tackles for loss also rnaked ninth in the MAC last season.
  • The Monarchs return 28 seniors on their roster, including seven who have returned for their fifth year of collegiate eligibility. Seventeen of those 28 are listed on this week's two-deep, including 13 projected as starters.
  • King's comes into this year's season with a total of 11 coaches on staff, and of that group three are King's graduates (Ben Bakanas, Joe Damiano, Tommy Gilmore). 
  • King's was picked to finish eighth in the MAC Preseason Coaches Poll among the 11 conference schools. Delaware Valley was slated first and recieved all 10 first-place votes.
  • Tyler Moore was sound in the pocket in the second half, delivering 21 passes on 31 attempts for 233 yards and a touchdown, while Tyler Carey caught five passes for 84 yards and a touchdown.
  • The defense was led by Joseph Carchio with seven tackles, including six solo, and four different Monarchs recorded interceptions in the win. Dallas Solomon was a beast on the defensive line, recording five tackles, incuding 4.0 tackles for a loss of 19 yards and 2.0 sacks for a loss of 15 yards with a forced fumble.
  • As a team, the Monarchs totaled 271 yards of offense with 14 first downs on 60 plays in the win. They were also 2-for-2 in red zone scores and chances.
  • King's defense ranks second in the MAC as they are holding opponents to 10.0 points per game, while they lead the conference in rushing defense as they hold teams to 22.0 of rushing yards a contest.
  • The Monarchs offense ranks second in the MAC in passing offense with 233.0 yards per game, while the defensive pass efficiency is a conference-best 87.9 percent.
  • On special teams, the King's kick return unit is averaging a conference-high 32.7 yards per return and a MAC second-best 16.0 yards per punt return. The Monarch kickers are also getting it done as they lead the MAC with 43.5 yards per kickoff and 41.8 yards per punt.
