Shoemaker Takes Gold in Weight Throw to Lead King's on Day One of MAC Indoor Track and Field Championships

READING, PA (February 23, 2024) -- Katey Shoemaker won the gold medal in the women's weight throw with a new program-record mark to lead the King's College men's and women's indoor track and field teams on day one of the 2024 Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday at Alvernia University's PLEX. The women are currently fifth out of 13 scoring teams with 23 points, while the men have not recorded a team score yet.
 
On the Track
60 Meter Dash

Jacob Mullery and Jordan Rife took 13th and 14th, respectively, in the event and both finished third in their heats as Mullery crossed in a personal best time of 7.20 seconds while Rife posted a time of 7.21 seconds. Kyle Dunbar of DeSales posted the top time in the preliminary heat in 6.96 seconds.
 
Abigail Springer was the top finisher for King's, placing 15th overall in the preliminary heats in 8.34 seconds. Juliet Brady was next to place in 8.40 seconds, while Sophia Hahn recorded a time of 8.48 seconds. Laura Mathews of Stevens had the top finish in the preliminary heat in 7.79 seconds.
 
5,000 Meter Run
Julia Johnson finished in the top-15 in the event, placing 13th overall in 19:54.56. Widener's Gabriella Nye took first in 17:50.99.
 
60 Meter Hurdles
Victoria Zultevicz secured a spot in the finals for the event as she placed seventh in the preliminary heats and second in her heat in 9.81 seconds. Laura Mathews of Stevens finished first in the preliminary round with a new meet record of 8.59 seconds.
 
4x200 Meter Relay
The men's team of Jacob Mullery, Jordan Rife, Ameen Jabbar, and Andrew Novrocki took 11th overall in 1:35.65. The team from Widener placed first overall in 1:31.61.
 
For the women, the Monarchs just missed the podium as they placed ninth in 1:51.95 behind the efforts of Juliet Brady, Abigail Springer, Sophia Hahn, and Victoria Zultevicz. The team from Stevens won the event in 1:45.87.
 
Distance Medley Relay
The King's women's team of Zoe Tomko, Laura Dainauski, Ava Butcher, and Mikaela Majcher placed 10th overall in 13:39.72. Misericordia's team took home the gold in 12:36.43.
 
In the Field
Pole Vault

Victoria Zultevicz had a podium finish in the event, placing seventh overall as she cleared a height of 3.15 meters, while Liz Porto recorded a mark of 2.40 meters. Widener's Savannah Steger won the event with a height of 3.40 meters.

Long Jump
Victoria Zultevicz made the podium again in the event, placing seventh with a new personal-best mark of 4.98 meters on her first attempt. Laura Mathews of Stevens won the event with a jump of 5.62 meters.
 
Weight Throw
Jet Li Tang was the top finisher for the Monarch men, taking 16th in the field of 36 with a mark of 13.31 meters on his first toss. Jacob Martinez cleared the top-20, finishing 19th with a personal best toss of 12.96 meters on his third attempt, while Carnell Kemp rounded out the King's competitors with a  throw of 12.57 meters with his first throw. Nathan Williams from Stevenson won the event with a mark of 18.49 meters.
 
Katey Shoemaker secured the first gold medal for King's in the championship weekend, shattering her previous program-record mark of 14.53 meters with a toss of 15.58 meters on her sixth and final throw. The Monarchs also saw two more make the podium as Delaney Hilferty placed fourth with a personal best mark of 14.02 meters on her first attempt and Anna Bellucci took fifth with a toss of 13.77 meters on her third toss. Caitlin Kirk just missed a podium spot in her first MAC Championships, placing ninth with a personal best throw of 13.49 meters on her second attempt, while Rhian Crowley rounded out a strong event for King's with a 16th-place finish in the field of 36 with a mark of 12.14 meters on her first toss.
 
Multis
Heptathlon

Travis Lane currently sits at 4th place after the first half of the heptathlon with 2,339 points. In the 60 meter dash, Lane finished fifth in 7.44 seconds before placing sixth in the long jump with a mark of 5.83 meters on his first attempt. Lane recorded a mark of 11.11 meters in the shot put on his second toss to place fifth before finishing the day with a height of 1.65 meters to finish seventh in the high jump. Alex Sabo of Lebanon Valley currently leads the field with a total of 2,678 points after the first four events.

The Monarchs return to Alvernia's PLEX tomorrow morning as action is set to begin at 10:15 a.m. with the pentathlon 60 meter hurdles.
