Armitage, Shoemaker, Varner Medal on Day One of 2025 MAC Indoor Track and Field Championships

READING, PA (February 28, 2025) – Maddy Armitage, Katey Shoemaker, and Brandy Varner all brought home medals on the opening day of the 2025 Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Indoor Track and Field Championships. The Monarchs also had eight podium finishes, broke seven records, and had 12 personal bests to begin action in the championship weekend.
 
The King's women are currently third with 29.5 points in the team standings, while the men are 11th with eight points.
 
On the Track
60 Meter Dash

Abigail Springer finished seventh in the preliminary heats in 8.14 seconds to secure a spot in tomorrow's final. Mariam Koita of Widener won the preliminary heat in 7.75 seconds.
 
Jacob Mullery will also compete in tomorrow's finals heat as he placed fifth overall with a personal best time of 7.05 seconds. Eastern's Ni'Male Greenwod had the top preliminary time in 6.85 seconds.
 
60 Meter Hurdles
Victoria Zultevicz won the preliminary heats in a new indoor program record time of 9.20 seconds and will compete in the finals tomorrow. She tops her previous time of 9.40 seconds from the 2023 MAC Championships.
 
On the men's side, Josh Malone finished in the top 20 in a new indoor record time of 9.14 seconds, topping the previous time of 9.16 seconds set by Matthew Marsh at the 2018 MAC Indoor Track and Field Championships. Eastern's Ian Hopkins won the preliminary heats in 8.28 seconds.
 
5,000 Meter Run
Cecilia Chipriano improved on her seeding spot as she placed 15th overall in a personal best time of 19:59.51 seconds. Widener's Gabriella Nye won the event in 17:42.90.
 
4x200 Meter Relay
The women's team of Abigail Springer, Sophia Hahn, Ava Butcher, and Victoria Zultevicz set a new indoor program record in 1:48.83 to finish fourth overall. Widener's team won the event in 1:44.94.
 
The men's team of Jacob Mullery, Kival Clarke, Alek Gorski, and Andrew Novrocki finished in a new record time of 1:34.64, topping the previous time of 1:34.74 set by the team of Emmanuel Edoukou, Alex Solano, Matthew Nelson, and Mitch Forgash from the 2020 MAC Championships. The team from Misericordia won the event in 1:29.70.
 
Distance Medley Relay
The King's team of Preston Klem, Alek Gorski, Tyler Petty, and Owen Foytack finished fifth to place on the podium with a program record time of 10:36.06. Messiah was the top finisher in 10:16.46.
 
In the Field
High Jump

Maddy Armitage brought home bronze and made her mark on the record book again, breaking her previous record of 1.57 meters with a height of 1.58 meters. Dani Rimsky placed 12th overall with a personal best height of 1.42 meters, while Abby Thompson took 15th with a mark of 1.42 meters.
 
Long Jump
Jordan Jones made his mark on his first championship event as he finished sixth overall with a jump of 6.51 meters on his fifth attempt. Misericordia's Matthieu Brunelle won the event with a mark of 7.09 meters.
 
Weight Throw
This was a huge event for the women's scoring with three on the podium. Katey Shoemaker topped her previous indoor record mark of 15.76 meters with a toss of 15.85 meters on her second throw of the night to finish second, while Brandy Varner hit a personal best throw of 15.18 meters on her final attempt to place third. Delaney Hilferty also finished on the podium in fourth with a toss of 15.14 meters on her first try, while Caitlin Kirk took ninth to finish one spot off the podium with a personal best throw of 14.19 meters on her first attempt. Anna Bellucci and Sophia Lukowski also threw well in the event, as Bellucci posted a mark of 13.25 meters and Lukowski finished with a personal best toss of 13.15 meters. Eastern's Savana Dodd won the event with a mark of 16.30 meters.
 
Carnell Kemp secured a spot on the podium as he placed eighth overall with a personal best throw of 14.49 meters on his second attempt. Joseph Schneider threw well with a personal best mark of 11.57 meters on his first try, while Brady Rutkoski finished with a toss of 11.06 meters on his first attempt. Widener's Isaac Almoney was the top finisher with a mark of 17.70 meters.

Day two of the championship weekend is set to begin tomorrow morning at 9:45 a.m. with the men's heptathlon 60 meter hurdles followed by the women's pentathlon at 10:00 a.m.
